How's the oil getting up the pipe from the turbo, against the air stream?

Could centripetal force fling it up there - im wondering how far up the pipe it is. Guess there's no real way to tell.

My vote still goes on some sort of pressure blockage, rather than turbo seals, but, i guess, in time, we'll know! : )

So I figured I'd circle back on this one and let you all know the update.

Turbo was fine. It's all a result of oil pressure from the engine. It got a lot worse, started leaking from a few other places. Then the thick smoke began. Finally I gave up and I'm now swapping in a newer 300tdi.

Based on a lot of other bodge jobs I'm finding on this old girl (you should see what I found a PO had done to one of the diffs) I figured it could be any number of issues and I'll save myself a lot of time going for an engine I already know is fine.

If I ever do open it up and try a rebuild I'll come back and let you all know (the long list of issues I found).

Anyway... back to putting the new one in. Including a new clutch, transfer box, and new front and back axels.

Joy.

You said the engine had direct feed incoming air to the turbo, minus air filter, it does not take long for a diesel engine to be "dusted", the rings and cylinders will wear rapidly with no air filtration, possibly that engine has so much blowby that the oil separator could not handle it, giving a build up of oil in the crankcase ventilation system. You are right to swap out for a better engine, and replace the air filter, they are definitely required to prolong engine life.

Yeah. It's something I figured at least wouldn't have been helping it, that's for sure. Air filter ready to go in with the new engine.

I don't get these POs that have done half arsed jobs all over the old girl. They must have known they weren't keeping her for long or something. At least she's getting some love (and a lot of money spent on her) now.

Today's discovery... she probably needs a new steering box too. She's quickly turning into triggers broom!
