I read a lot of posts on tuning 300tdi s before going ahead so wanted to share my thoughts as a thank you to everyone who contributes and it may help someone else too.
When I got my 300tdi (I had one a few yrs ago too) I found the lag below 200rpm infuriating, particularly when cold when it was verging on the dangerous. So as before i tweaked the fuel pump a bit and all was much better. Its free or cheap if you pay a garage and Id recommend doing it to everyone. I did the EGR valve and noticed no diffference at all, not surpising as i later found it had already been done further up on the engine block. It already had no CAt. I bought a caravan and decided more umph would be helpful (it was just an excuse really) so I looked at big intercoolers. looking didnt help so I bought a Jeremy Fearns one off ebay. Many yrs ago I had an old 90 with a 2.8 isuzu engine which I had installled as the original turbo diesel was caput (tdi s were too expensive back then as a replacement). This had no intercooler at all so I added a big one and it made for an incredible thing! Anyway I installed the big intercooler on this disco and the question is was it worth it? Well more air, or denser cooler air, means more fuel so I had it tweaked up a little more and checked the boost with a gauge to see if it was ok. Its not been tweaked at all and was running at 1.5 bar. So its lasted 130 thou miles and 17 yrs so when people say you cant alter the boost on 300tdis Im sceptical now. anyway the difference.....its better, pulls better and from lower revs so ideal for towing but then it was pretty good to start. Was it worth spending on the big intercooler? No not really. I console myself with it should run cooler etc etc as you do when you have spent out a bit. In my opinion the fuelling change is the best mod you can make for more power.
Sorry if I have rambled on I just hope this may be of interest.
