HI everyone. could anybody tell me if it is ok to run 205x16 tubeless tyres on tubed rims with tubes fitted.as this was the case when I bought my landrover series3.. but I have just bought four new Cooper discoverer 205x16 tubeless tyres but I have been told it is dodgy to run tyres this way. If this is so would discovery 1 steel 205x16 tubeless rims fit my series 3 swb. Thanks Steve
 
First read the sidewalls, despite being tubeless they may say something like "can be fitted with tubes". Its not a show stopper if they don't but some do and if they do its problem solved. The tyre manaufacturers and ERTO advice (which seems to be how the law is interpreted) is that a tubeless tyre can be fitted to a tubeless rim so long as it is used as a tubed tyre which is a long winded way of saying it must have a tube. While tubeless tyres will work on a tube rim they are designed to run tubeless only on tubeless rims.
 
Standard steel defender wheels fir a series 3. I replaced my old tubed wheels with defender ones. There is more tyre choice for tubeless.

It's not safe to put a tube in a tubeless tyre because of the ridges inside the tyre can rub the tube, and most tyre places wont do it unless you say off road only, they
will put talcum powder inside.
As said above Disco or Defender will fit your series...

That is the legend, but in practice I have never found it to be a problem.
What is a problem is to use tubes with tubeless rims, which have a much larger hole for the tyre valve.

Personally, with a Series, I would use tube type rims, tubes, and tyres meant for tubes, 6.00x16 or 7.50x16.
That is what the vehicle is meant to run, and later wheels with metric tyres don't perform so well, and look pretty silly.
 
mod land rover wolf rims look fab on a series and are tubeless.

Discovery 1 steel wheels don't look that great on a series and the offset means they might rub on the inside.
 
I run tubeless tyres with tubes on tube rims and its been fine, the tyres do say something like "can be fitted with tubes" - I'll go see exaclty what they say. They are BFGs. I've had the problem with inner tube valve sizes and now spec the tubes with the smaller valve and carry a couple of valve hole adaptors as my wheels seem to have some small and some large holes despite all being tubed type They adapt TR13 to TR 15 holes

yes those tyres had got a bit perished, had been on years with low annual mileage, old pic, they have gone now.

replaced the dust cover too, not sure what happened to the old one, assume someone knocked it off, can't see why someone would nick one iirc they are less than a pound, unless they wanted the aged patina

those black covers would go better with the grey body colour though. if I was keeping the truck I might change them.

Some folk will steel anything, I put a bit of Sikaflex round mine they've stayed on for 3 years :)
 
Fitted tubeless 205x16 to my tubed type rims many years ago and never looked back...no tubes fitted Std Series LWB rims.

My mate runs the same...not a problem... won't come off the rim believe me.

Much more reliable than have puncher prone fast deflating tubes...and a big weight saving.

That is very foolish. Tubeless rims have a ridge running around the outer section of the rim to hold the bead in place, tubed rims do not have this bead as the sidewall is held in place by the tube, see pic below highlighting this (not mine, from google). If you run tubed rims tubless you run the risk of catastrophic failure if the sidewall is pushed down the rim as there is no ridge to hold it in place.

No its not....I am aware of the beads....nonsense.

How the bloody hell does a tubed tyre stay on if the beads are so important.

Been on mine like this over 20 years...
