Trouble removing wings - screws behind grill : (

300tdi 110 non-aircon

I think ive removed all the outer wing fixings, bar the ones on the side, behind the grill.

I cant find a picture, but there's two, m8, i think, that screw sideways from just behind the grill, into, i think, some sort of captive nut, which is down the side of the headlamp housing.

Captive nut assembly just spins. And the way its all cliped together, and the location, seems to make it impossible to get a spanner on.

And there's not clearance for a grinder.

Anyone had this before - how did you deal with it?

You could take the outer wing off as shown in the video doriz posted.
This is the offending item.

IIRC it's a square nut held in place by a metal clip that goes through that hole and pushes over the panel, holding the nut in place. It's a bit of a wrist twister, but you can get a small spanner in and hold it once you know what you are looking for. I took this picture holding my phone in there so I could see what was going on.

i have the outer side of the wing half removed as it is, so i think ill just push on and complete it that way.
maybe on the other side, ill know better from the first one, what it looks like, and how to grip it.

all i want to do is change the bulkhead, and im messing about with bolts forward of the radiator!

What, to do the bulkhead?

Doing things like the brake boxes will be easier with the wings out the way, also all the wiring stuff - its probably worth the effort to remove them, and, when i put them bac on, ill use stainless fasteners, so, when the come off again in the future, it should be easy enough then.

The wings on this vehical are pretty battered. Im not yet sure how far i want to go with cosmetics (i quite like the idea of battered outside, but fully functioning / restored / protected underneath). But, if i do start getting carried away with new wings, at least the hard work will have been done.

Have ended up taking both wings, and the front off in one go, and then getting the grinder on it.

Tomorrow ill attack the heater and the peddle boxes.

Just make sure you smash all the fixings with WD before removing, my heater fixings were rusted solid and access with all panels in place is difficult.

Below is a cut and paste from another forum. I find it hard enough taking photos, let alone inserting them into threads etc.

My phone has stopped uploading photos, but i took some snaps on my partners one -

You can see now why i was keen on galvanizing the new bulkhead!

Strangely, the chassis, apart from the bulkhead outriggers, isnt so bad -

Fine, until you get to the mess that is the outriggers -

You cant see too well in the photo, but thats a bit of plate on the top there, stuck on with some sort of mastic, and then done over with underseal.

This is where im at now -

I just need to do the peddle boxes, and that will be the last of the stripping (bar unclipping brake pipes, wires etc)

But -

Im going to do the outriggers first, using the existing bulkhead as a jig. Ill do them one at a time, get them tacked up into place, and then weld them properly when the bulkhead is out of the way.

I have a week off work, so im trying to press on as much as possible.

Ive not got the new bulkhead back from the painters yet, but will do some photos when it returns.

That bulkhead must have been taking in some water. After the outriggers another favourite place for the chassis to go is behind where the gearbox cross member bolts to the chassis rails.
Looks like your making good progress. I won't ask about the crocodile livery

Previous owner had it for 12yrs. It was very much a family adventure car. He did not say, but im sure he let his kids paint it.
The bulkhead had had the outer corners bodged through an mot previously, but, yeah, the whole lot was leaking pretty bad.

I wonder what ashtree (etc) would say if i traded this one in on their rebate scheme! : )

Ill re-check the gearbox area. I have a hole about the size of a 2pence (after prodding, rather than before) in the 2nd outrigger / body mount - just in the top of it, which should be an easy enough job, and then the removable CSW cross member has got holes in the ends, but ive got a YRM one of those to fit (once i work out quite how - apparently you remove the triangular sections behind the 2nd row doors)

My chassis rails looked fine. It wasn't until I unbolted the gearbox crossmember to find very large holes behind them. The plates on the end of the cross-member trap dirt and water up against the chassis rail and create very good rusting conditions.
