Did you just guess at the pipe size required, or is it the same as proper bought ones?
I have a (badly) home made one on mine that I'm lookin to improve. I have some 2 1/4" aluminium tubing (borrowed from work), and not sure if it's big enough???

The original pipe from the airbox to the wing vent is 2 1/4", so your pipe should be fine.
I used 2 1/2" because that's what guttering downpipe is!

Trewy, from reading this, I take it you kept the standard airbox and filter.
I was thinking of connecting my aluminium ducting directly to the flexible at turbo inlet (binning the factory filter and airbox)
and putting this on the top of the intake tube as a filter.
Its a stainless performance filter thing wot you you normally find on Kevin's (or should that be Grippas ) mota darn
Maccydees car park. The only thing that worries me is water ingress from rain etc as there won't be any
drain on the system.
Do you or any of the other bright sparks on ere have any views on wether this is a good plan or not????

Trewy - i dunno wot the Kernow lanes are like - but that wouldnt last 2 mins on the amsheer lanes - its mainly drivin thru bushes an trees and the side flexi bit would be ripped orf in no time.

Oooh a B&Q special. Every fooker round here makes em like that. Cos we're all tite fookers. Trew it dint matter if it gets a few knocks cos it's easy to repair just keep a foot or so of, drainpipe, tube of solvent weld adhesive and an hacksaw in the landy. If it gets a whack cut a patch and stick it over the hole. 30secs and it'll be airtite agin. & the flexi will just flatten if that takes a knock but that's easily fixed by sticking yer hand in and reshaping it.

I'd be worried about rainwater ingress with that boy racer filter on top.
Why don't you get a K&N in-line filter and plumb it in under the bonnet with a proper mushroom or safari type top on the snork?

I decided to make me own for 2 reasons. First off, they're expensive to buy for what they are. Secondly, I think it's very difficult to get a proper seal to the outside of the wing and the plastic mouldings inside the wing are a poor fit.
I used a length of 70mm flexible ducting (cut into 2 pieces), a length of 2.5" plastic downpipe and 2 downpipe 90 deg bends. Also needed were some jubilee clips and some strip ally (to make the brackets).
I got the top second hand from flea-bay for a tenner.
The total cost was less than 30 quid and it works - I tested it by putting a plastic bag over the top and the engine stopped.
Am reet pleased with meeself.
Looks good mate , only one thing bothers me though and that is on the last picture the pipe looks very close to the exhaust down pipe, are you not worried that it might melt or worse yet catch fire???

It's not as close as it looks in the pic (the camera shortens perspective) and it follows the line of the original pipe. The flexi that I used is heat resistant to 150 degC, so I think it will be OK.

You think he is tight? My budget was £3 for the bit of pipe and the rest was borrowed (from the garden).
Take a bull bar...
Cut it up a bit and add some pipe, silicon, make some brackets etc..
Worked superb..no dust or any crap got in the airbox at all.
I will be doing a similar thing for the series 2a...except I will be swapping over to a Range Rover or similar airbox

No, it's well clear of the eggsorst and the ducting is rated at 125 degC.
The side vent is now redundant - the snorkle replaces it!

Bad plan if you loose the filter offa the end of the pipe theirs nuthing stopping a small fury animal getting sucked in and meeting its doom on the blades of ya turbo
and have you seen the mess they can make of the engine bay.
