Ok guys, It's been a while, I've been out of the trade longer than I care to mention and I'm a wee bit out of touch when it comes to spec levels and tech knowledge on fuel economy etc. So maybe if I can outline what I need/want, some of you could share some knowledge as to inherent issues you know of, things to look for/avoid.

pleeeeeeeeeease?

I have a budget of circa £6500 I want Diesel Manual, only spec requirement would be air con, the rest I'm not too precious about.....I want an "it does what it says on the tin" kind of brute. Reliability and economy are key, I'm aware of build quality and certain rust spot issues but are there other things I should look for? If I recall, back when I was selling them I think we had a product recall surrounding the SLS, was this rectified? for this budget is there a certain facelift/model year I should aim for?

any and all nuggets of info massively appreciated

Har har I knew you'd turn to the dark side eventually :D! You should be able to get alot of Disco for that kinda money.

You'd be lookin at a Disco 2 td5 for that money, much the same as mine but not the van version! There's loads of guides on here. They facelifted em in about 2003 and the last of the line were fully loaded! Get a G4 one and depress WLJ:D

Diesel Do is right.
Well, Discovery wise, 6500 should get you a late D2 (03/04) with all the trimmings, in good condition. After 2004, the D3s seem to jump up in price fairly dramatically, and I've always found it wierd, but a 2001 Rangey (P38) is about 2500, where as a 2002 Rangey (L322) jumps up to aroud 9000. And then there's defenders that rise in price gradually depending on condition and age, from about a 1991 for 2500-3000, and are only going to appreciate.

Anyway, presumably you're after a disco, and you should get a goodun for that money. It's my guess, that for your money, you could also easily end up with 4500 worth of disco if you're not careful as I can see a dealer poaching ebay for 4 grand D2s, valeting them and popping a 6 grand price tag on them. Keep us posted on what you get.

Infact, further to my last post, I don't think that there would be too much difference between a disco you end up buying for 4 grand, to one for 5 or 6. I dare say that just as good an idea would be to get one for about 4500, and then spend the other two grand, on any repairs, and tarting it up with toys, (winch etc, ejector seat, etc).

Sage advice actually, didn't think of that.

Yep, I should think that for that type of money, you should be looking at one of the last TD5 Discos. Whether you want to go for a fully loaded one is another matter only you can answer.

I think all the last ones had climate control, so no worries there. But at the end there were two models, one fully loaded, the name of which escapes me and a more budget one. I went for the budget one, the Pursuit model with 5 seats. Not so much because it's what I wanted, but because I saw a good one. But it has the advantages of no rear air suspension and no ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement), both things that can go wrong and cost money, or even when cheap to fix, affect reliability. They're both good things to have but there's a reliability trade off, especially as these cars get older.

I'd be looking at a facelift disco 2 with ALL the trimmings and full service history for that money and a bit of change in a good deal really!

Which like said you could spend on some bits to spruce it up a bit (some tints n light guards would set it off nicely!)

EDIT: Something like this after a bit of haggling looks very nice Autotrader - Grey TD5 ES Facelift
