I have a hell of a noise coming from my transmission... here's the symptoms...

Generally most noticeable after being out for around five minutes, when changing from fourth into fifth and when in any gear and backing off the throttle to have only about 5-10% throttle on there's a grinding, rotational noise, quite loud that seems to be coming from the transfer box and/or front prop.

Now I know the front prop is knackered, the UJ is gone and it's lashing all over the place, that goes without question so I am replacing that.

My question however is if it's possible that the knackered prop has taken out the output bearing in the transfer box and/or something else?

It's a disco 1 with a 2" Procomp lift kit and cranked radius arms.

i would change the prop first and see what happens, and you will need to replace it with a wide angle unit if you havent already

I run a 3" lift with standard props with no issues, yet.

Bit of a vibration on overrun at first, but that's cos the ujs were stuck. Now they flex fully and freely and there is no noise or evidence of wear.

The noise could have been transmitted through the transfer box, or it could quite easily be knackered aswell :D

but do you have castor correction arms?

Yeah it is weird.

As i say, originally the ujs had stuck "in the middle" because on the standard car they had never had to flex.

When I fitted the stuff I thought we'll see how it goes. I fitted the spacer cos the prop was no longer long enough.

First motorway trip and I was getting bad vibration on overrun but after a days offroading that seemed to clear up.

The other week I did a 500 mile round trip, and it drove like a street car. Frankly I'm chuffed cos those wide angle props are unfair prices.

I have just rebuilt my propshafts whilst the diffs were out, gave the rear one a new UJ cos it had gone sticky, and the sliders needed cleaning.

The shafts now slide in and out effortlessly, so I'm well pleased that they won't be stressing my transfer box bearings anymore.

They are a strange beast these landys... :(

I'm running QT3s as well. The disco had been crudely lifted on 2" blocks under the springs by someone prior to me, so I replaced with the procomps... I have a funny feeling though that the procomps are a greater than 2" lift, was a secondhand kit so not 100% sure!

Got a new standard prop which I'll chuck on, maybe this weekend if I get time and will let you guys know...!

So new prop on... wasn't the best but was a free one so will do for now! The new prop transferbox UJ was somewhat sticky in the first spider, but she seems to be doing ok so far. Grinding noise is gone to be replaced by some dull-knocking noises on pull away, on inspection it looks like the UJ spiders might be colliding... looks like double cardon is going to have to be the way to go. Also noticed my clunking noise when breaking hard or turning left is back, looks like I'll be looking at the swivel balls and wheel bearings again, mind you i probably should shim up the radius arm mounts as it looks like I've narrow arms in wide mounts! ARGH.
