Thanks everyone for the help with my brakes - turned out to be the adjustment on the master cylinder. Now I have finally got the car on the road - yahoo - more problems are obvious.
I have a lot of noise from the transmission. No problems when im accelerating or decelerating but in between when im just touching the accelerator it sounds as if the prop shaft is about to drop off. Lot of play somewhere? anyone any idea the most likely places to look?
Its a 1966 series 2A 88 inch.

4 wheel drive seems ok, there does seem to be a lot of play in the front axle i.e. I can turn the propshaft about a quarter turn before it takes up the slack. Have checked oil levels in axle gearbox and trnasfer box and all ok.

Stick your location in your User CP, then someone might be able to tell you more and might offer to have a quick look!!!

There's always play but 1/4 turn, if it really is that, seems excessive. Could be UJ's, though they normally knock, could be prop splines, but they also sort of knock rather than whine, could be output flange splines or half-shafts ... could be a lot of things all slightly worn and moaning about it !! ;)

Could be differential, hard to tell like the others have said!

Stick up your location and im sure someonw will crawl under there if your really stuck!

Either that or fit some free wheeling hubs!

This will just cover the problem its an option though.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions - I am in North Wales near Denbigh. I took off the front propshaft as it had slight sideways movement in the sliding joint. Tried the car without it and still had that vibration when I took my foot off the accelerator. I have a spare untested gearbox (still on a scrap 88 diesel) so im coming around to the idea of taking that off and trying it. Does anyone know if the gearbox on petrol and diesel are the same and if there are any easy ways of checking a box thats not on a running engine?

Doh, turned out to be the rear propshaft, changed it and vibration gone, everything is great well for next few miles.
