Having only just joined, am afraid I'm immediately asking for advice.......

I have a 1991 3.9 RR classic with 82K on the clock (ZF auto) It is relatively new to me, but the extensive records which came with the vehicle show that the the transmission oil has been changed regularly as had the engine oil (normally every 3,000miles!)

I have noticed a recent 'noise' coming from what appears to be the left h/s of the Transmission tunnel under hard acceleration from standstill (entering a busy roundabout) or particularly when starting a climb. Under gentle acceleration the 'noise' is difficult to detect. The other characteristic I have noticed (or may have imagined) is that the 'noise appears to be worse if turning whilst accelerating (?).

My initial thoughts were that it was a Transmission issue, although I am now beginning to wonder whether it is a prop shaft type issue...........

Whilst I appreciate it is very hard to explain a noise, it does sound to be more of a grinding /rubbing /vibration than a knocking or clonking I would expect with a Universal Joint or similar (or could it be the early stages of this prob?).

I am struggling to get good advice locally - everyone wants to change my gearbox without checking! The prob doesn't seem to be a significant one at present (famous last words).

Any advice or a steer on whether I should start saving for a Transmission 'issue' would be greatly appreciated.

Hiya, best thing to do first is have a good look at all the prop bolts and Universal joints to see if anything looks iffy. A good going round with a grease gun wouldn't go a miss whilst you're down there. I not too hot on tranmissions but hopefully one of the boys or girls will point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the advice........will get underneath and have a poke around.

Apologies for the late response, have been tucked up in bed having what my wife terms 'man flu' for the past couple of days...........

Could have been exacerbated by the abuse I inflicted on myself whilst celebrating the Welsh win over the Wallabies on Saturday!
