anybody put a 2.5 transit diesel in a series,? does it need a engine plate, just looking round for something to put into my 74 land rover carawagon, at the moment its got a 2.5 n/a in it but missing the injector pump cheers, pete.

^^^agree - if you are changing engines, I would look at a TDI or even a 2.5na landy lump. Transit wouldn't gain anything.

I thought about it, but realised that the tranny engine allthough ok isnt very good, and yes the engine needs an adaptor plate and also needs special mount brackets.
Re sale value wont be that great with a tranny engine.
Unless your skint put the 200 tdi in.

200tdi or 300tdi but NOT the transit lump they are poo

i beg to differ the transit banana engine is pretty damn good ive personaly seen them buggers running sweet as a nut with 500.000 plus miles on the clock and the engines out of t250 tranny tippers avent arf got some poke but the dual mass flywheel needs converting to standard to get the best hard wearing lifespan out of them :D:D:D

hello
i put a 2.5di into my series 3 SWB to replace a two and a quarter standard unit.
it is not noisier than the old engine, is much quicker, and i can get over 35 mpg on a long run.
you do need a MILNER adaptor plate. you do need to remove part of the OS engine mount on the chassis and weld a bit in.
a couple of tiny cuts have to be done on the footwells.
You may need to provide an electric fuel pump. for some reason my bulkhead fouled the mechanical lift pump on the footwell.
Read Diesel BOB website on his opinion of the engine.
Plus.. no electrics other than oil switch, temp gauge and stop solenoid. it is very simple.
the land rover 200tdi is probably better, but costs lots more..

If you get a later tranny engine with yellow spot injectors you get a 140hp lump that'll pull like a train.
Better sticking to a landy engine though.

i have a series 2a that i have just finished putting a 200tdi in, goes like stink, i have a m8 that has a transit 2.5 n/a in his defender and had to mount it at 45 degrees (on its side) to get it to line up with the gear box, piece of crap for pulling and getting off the line but once up to speed runs well and destroys your ear drums. Would not suggest putting a transit in it
