OK, a mate of mine recently bought a 1995 Discovery, 3.9i V8 with an LPG kit fitted to it. The only thing is, the tank are torpedo-style ones that sit underneath the sills – and he has bought the car for offroading, so they need to go.

Now, he’s not too fussed about having LPG on his car anyway, and I’d quite like to have it on mine. So, is it possible to remove the kit from his car and install it on mine, a 1991 3.9i V8 RRC? Same engine, so can’t see why not...but is there anything obvious I am missing? Will removing the kit leave holes in various engine components on his car? And would they be interchangeable with mine? I would get a mechanic mate of mine to do the swap as its waaay beyond my spannering skills, but just wondering if there is any obvious reason I am missing that the kit can’t be transferred to mine? Hopefully be a lot cheaper than the £1,500 to have a new kit fitted!!

Incidentally, I would then like to mount both torpedo tanks in the boot of mine, probably where the spare wheel is, and carry a can of tyre weld for emergencies. Any problems with this?

Ta!

Probably alot more grief for your mate to sort his than to plumb it into yours I would imagine(No expert I'm afraid)

For a Classic a single point system is used so £1,500 seems a bit pricey to me. Multi point systems are being fitted for less these days.

Would have thought 2 torpedo tanks would be too big for spare wheel on a Classic but there is a made to size tank that does fit up in there though. I have a 85litre useable in mine, takes up some boot space but still have workable room left and get decent range.

At lastly having just come past a shell garage selling it for 82.9 it probably isn't worth all the hastle anyway!!

How much?! 82.9p a litre? Ouch!! Still better than £1.25 for petrol I guess, but even so - how has it gone up 15p-20p a litre so quickly?!

Then you have to factor in 10 to 15% less economy making it over a quid. Then there's the time you will drive 10 miles out of your way to fill up on gas only to find they've either run out or the pumps not working so you end up sticking petrol in it anyway!!

At half price worth all the hastle at 80% of the cost just not worth it unless you get one already converted.

First of all they managed to put all the British LPG installers out of business by allowing cheap labour to flood the market and take over and now they want to put those boys out of work by inflating the price of LPG to stupid levels. Could only happen in this country!!!

Yeah, it sounds less and less worth bothering with I must admit! Think I'd be better selling my car and buying one already converted - only problem is, I know mine is a good solid car, and I could end up buying a heap o'sh!te!!

A mechanic without knowledge of LPG would be dangerous to use to fit the kit as there are many safety features that need to be adressed otherwise it should not be a problem

Well they're not an LPG specialist, I think they've done LPG before and definitely fitted Nitrous kits, which I am guessing are plumbed in in a similar manner?

No they are not. :mad:Ive fitted a few Nitrous kits the cars and an Orange Yamaha XJR bike (that was fun!!). But I would not do an LPG car. Completely different fitting and lot more dangerous if it goes wrong. Nitrous is not inflammable for a start!!!

I can't believe you and Carl are thinking of butchering Daisy! :p

Seriously - would agree with Alfaitalia - be VERY careful with LPG and who you get to fiddle with it. Also I believe (but I'm no expert) that you have to make sure that the guy that does do the work is actually trained on that specific make of system.

I only say this as my mates got an LPG converted 90 and I was going to use his LPG chap to service etc the Disco but when I told him it was a Landi system, he said he couldn't do it as he wasn't trained on that specific make.

Maybe this was just BS but just best to be safe than sorry.....

Hope she's behaving for Carl and could you mention to him, I found the rear parcel shelf in the back of the garage, so if he/you are in the area, give us a shout and you can come and get it :)

Cheers,

Jon

paa..**** of ****..

I've fitted four complete LPG systems now, three were 2nd hand from either eBay or a breakers yard, the other a new multi-point Bigas kit.

As long as you're pretty competant, it's simple DIY stuff. The most time consuming tasks are fitting the tank(s) and running the piping from front to back. There are many rules to comply to, for example the amount of fixings on the main pipe, the height of the filler from the ground etc etc but it's mainly common sense.

Safety is an important issue and I see no problem in fitting a system and then letting a specialist go over it and then issue a safety/ compliance certificate. I have one for my RR, I think the cost of having this done is still under £50 if you shop around.

Also factor in the cost of purchasing the software and setup lead (you'll need a laptop) but these days it's all available on ebay for £40ish.

The 'governing body' for LPG installations is the LPGA, a self-elected association which is not particularly DIY friendly. However, they should be able to provide the construction and usage regulations.

LPG is perfectly safe if the system is properly installed and maintained. The problems arrise when components are neglected and running problems are ignored. I've driven various LPG cars for 15 years, with never a hint of a major problem.

Thanks for the info David.

Don't worry Jon, I don't think we're gonna bother now - not really economically viable! Think he is going to remove the tanks and have the system disconnected though so he can take her offroad safely - last thing you want to do is rip a 'live' LPG tank off the car!!

Will let Carl know about the parcel shelf too :)

Was only mock horror Mike... :) Agree that LPG all of a sudden has become shockingly expensive relative to Unleaded and the econs aren't stacking up like they used to . Deffo safest to have those tanks off and the system removed if she's going off road. They were low! I was always nervous about minor indiscretions at staggered crossroads in the local area... (i.e fook it...nobody's about.....what staggered junction?)

No panic ref the parcel shelf. It's not going anywhere.
