Hi there,
I just had a terrible noise from the transfer case. Turns out it was almost dry. Luckily no apparent damage. No noise after fluid change. It was always leaking a bit and I was told that that's "normal".
Is there a way of placing a sensor or building some sort of level indicator other than opening the fill plug and sticking a finger in?

PS its a 98 disco 300TDI automatic.

Cheers

Ady

I've been toying with fitting one of these.

If it is fitted just beneath the filler plug then you can keep an eye on the level weekly.

Most of the ones I have found requires a massive tap to cut the threads, Ideally I would be looking for a compression fit one that I could just bore a hole through the casing and nip it up tight.

It's actually not "normal" for them to leak, they never did from the factory, your's requires remedial work, intermediate shaft "O" ring seals are quite common but do require quite a bit of work to remedy hence them being left to leak away, output shaft seals are also common but can be easily replaced with a bit of patience and a modest tool box.

Thank you Dieseldog. That seems to be doable. What about a sensor? Something that would give a warning while driving (and possibly require a smaller tap? Is there anything like that available?

Hi, that's a good ideea with some warning for the transfer case oil level, it can be extended to the diffs too maybe...

watch the following scheme: http://new.lrcat.com/#!/1231/34809/34810/2622 nr 31 is a M14 blanking plug which is instead of nr 33 temp switch used only on NAS modells, you can use any M14 pressure switch there, something like this https://www.carbuildersolutions.com/de/oil-pressure-warning-light-switch-m14-x-1-5-5psi it will warn you if t's low on oil cos there will be not enough pressure then .... maybe somebody(@jamesmartin ?) can tell us exactly what pressure should be there cos i have no ideea but there is a huge variety of M14 pressure switches with different pressure ranges

or ... @dieseldog69 what thread has the bit from your pic?
