Hi

Just had a look under the old girl today and there is a little bit of play in the front output shaft where it joins the prop, there is between .5 and 1mm of play or there abouts, but its enough to let the oil leak out, anyone else had this problem? I think there might be some play in the carrier bearing but i am not sure, this might be nothing but i am about to leave on monday (fingers crossed) to do our trip across russia and the middle east, around 25,000 miles, should i be worried about this or is it just a typical landy leak???

i have a 200 tdi defender.

LOTS OF PICTURES OF THR TRIP!

Now the leak - hmm based on the trip you're doing I would be inclined to take a bearing and a seal with you just in case, to be honest that doesn't sound like too much play, I remember talking to Dave Ashcroft about this and he said they do have a little play in them and from what you say it does seem within limits.

It might just be the seal - could be worth a look - if you can get the bearing and the seal I would say strip it down and replace the seal at least - not a big job.

hi big if it was me i would have something done about this , if it didnt leave the factory like that i would worry a bit , take off the prop and see does the big nut meed to be tighened a couple of mm this can make a big differance , best of luck with the trip im sure you will have the time of your life

If your going to drop the prop - for the sake of the seal get one and fit it while your at it - if the nut is loose it could have damaged the seal by ratling about.

If you are trying to do the nut up put it in difflock and I use low range and 2nd but 1st high range or reverse will work. That way you have the resistance of the engine (turned off) engaged to the propshaft that is still attached and then with difflock you lock your output flange to the other one so you somthing to do it up against. If you find your turning the engine over before you think its tight enough put it into a lower gear (do not do this with the ignition on). Jai

Ah yes good point and the hand brake! Lol its been a long couple of days!

P.s when are you going away do you have AA cover? Jai

dont be trying to tighten the nut up to stop the leak - follow the instructions as posted in post 2 here and change the output seal - it's a 20 minute job

changed the seal today for a genuine part£9.76!!! and all looks good for now. Had a good look at the bearings and they seem ok and i also took of the botton cover and a good look inside and replace the gasket!
