I know it may have been covered but i cant find it. Ive just changed the oil in my t box and its startyed whining...im not saying it didnt do it before cos ive just syarted a bit of mwy driving and can here it. Right the question is...what exactly whines in the box and can it be repaired by a diy mechanic or is it a major task. Strange its exactly the same whine i had on my v8...300 tdi by the way 1997

Hi mate, I'm assuming you used EP 80-90 oil to GL5 spec? about 2.2ltrs and you filled it until it started coming back out?
 
good question im only assumin cos on my V8 it was the same whine and when i pulled on the high low gear knob the tone changed if you know what i mean. Like i say ive only just noticed it cos am doing a bit of motorway stuff.....i have a spare if it goes tits up

To be honest unless it's really bad I don't think it's go tits up.

I bought a TDi 300 last year from a bloke in Portsmouth. It had a bit of a whine too. Drove it back to my mates in Northampton so about 150mls and then gave it a good all oils service.

When I opened the sump for the T-box, there was one drop of oil that came out and that was it !!!!!!!! I filled it with EP 80-90 and drove 700mls back to my home in France. Then I gave her another T-box oilchange and she has been super ever since. Yes there is still a tiny bit of whine, but not like the screeching she was giving out !!!!
 
My old disco was just like that..

the tone would change as I pulled/pushed the HI/LOW gear knob...
wack the transfer box to neutral and with the engine running, go through all the gears, 1st,2nd,3rd..etc and see if you get the whine (you wont move as the transfer is in neutral)

If the noise isnt there, then its likely its your transferbox

on mine I left it like that, but when I sold my disco, it was really, really bad and the guy that bought it the transfer gave up 5 miles down the road.
My disco done maybe around 500 to 600 miles since the whine started till the box went
 
Well it has a weep an when i first checked it got about a litre in it but its one of them cars theres oil everywhere but nowt ever seems to go down and i check it weekly sometimes more if im heading out
