transfer box problem

i have just got a v8 auto, when driving i get a clicking noise from the transfer box, the noise can be made worse by moving the lever a little. also when cornering it feels as though the wheels skip a little bit!

could it be stuck in diff lock? the lever moves freely (a little expected resistance) and the warning lamp operates as normal.

when the transfer box is put into neutral and gearbox into drive the noise is apparant. not sure this helps!!

If you put the transfer box in Neutral then the Vehicle wont move.

When driving you shouldn't move the transfer box lever at all ... unless you're going very slow or double de-clutching and can do it smoothly.

Sounds like it's not going fully into gear ...

Make sure the diff lever is to the right and either fully up or down .. up is low box ... down is High Box. If it's nor been used for a while it may be that the lever isn't going fully down (or up), so put normal gearbox into first, transfer lever right and down and pull off slowly, then as the clutch is biting put a little pressure down on the transfer box lever and it might just snick down a little more, which should mean it's properly in gear.

Yeah, mine got sticky after standing for a while - actually jumped out of gear (the transfer box that is) and left me with no drive much to the annoyance of the queue behind me. As u say coax it in n it should work fine

First thought is that its stuck in diff lock, but if you have tried with the transfer lever in neutral then i'm puzzled, Did it drive? 'cos it shouldnt. so was the noise there with the vehicle stationary but the gearbox turning?.

One way to try and "unfreeze" the difflock is by reversing with the diff lock switched off.

hi thanks for the ideas, had a look today and the mechanism is free and moves correctly. it does drive but clicks along with road speed.

thinking that maybe a pin has worked its way out on the selector and now it is stuck in diff lock?!

any one got a transfer box for sale??
