Had a leaky oil seal on the rear output shaft of my transfer box, and it was starting to affect the hand brake. So I ordered a kit from island 4x4, and stripped it out fitted new flange, seal, felt washer, plain washer and new nut, but when I tightened up the nut the shaft starts to lock up I.e. stiff to rotate.
Wound back the nut very slightly, then took off the brake drum and tried it and it was better. I played around until it seemed to have the flange nipped up but not too much drag when I rotate the shaft.
It definitely not the brake dragging it seems to be pre loading the output bearing, is there a set pre load for this nut?

It is lt230 but it's the taper roller bearings on the main shafts which are set one by shimming and one by crushing a spacer until the pre load is reached.
This is the ball race on the output shaft which is just behind the rear output flange, tightening the flange retaining nut seems to have a clamping effect on the ball race.

The spacer sets the intermediate gear pre load.

Yes as you crush it then you load up the bearings, input shaft uses a shim.

My problem is that when Itighten the retaining nut on the rear output flange ( shown inside the brake drum here ) it seems to clamp the bearing at position 21
