so this noise has appeared and is getting louder. I have pulled the 110 off the road till I figure out what it is and am going to pull the tranny. Any input on the noise would be appreciated

I have an R380 tranny in a 300tdi

I have checked bearing and propshafts but it seems to be coming from the tranny

Thanks

Thanks. If it went away when I did this what would the answer be? Sorry. Its my first time with tranny issues

Edit.
1. I guess this could isolate it to the propshaft being dodgy

Cheers

I grabbed the props and pulled them back and forth to check for movement but there was none. I guess it may only move in a certain position or under heavy torque?

Yes the noise is with clutch in and out - no change in noise, but when accelerating it seems to go away. I am really hoping it is the props. Will try driving with only the rear on tonight to see if it makes the noise.

After driving with the cubby off and access hole open it is definitely coming more from in front of the transmission brake

I appreciate the input!!!

Cheers

Tim

Also has anyone had a front prop off recently. How tight is it to get back on? Mine almost has to compress 100% to get it installed. When I went from the V8 to the 300TDI I kept the same propshaft.

Cheers

Tim

Thanks for the input guys, I pulled the front prop off to take it for a spin but it doesn't seem that I have difflock, so this makes it a bit difficult........

After looking through the net the 1984-1985 V8 4 speed tranny is the only propshaft that has a different part number (my original engine and tranny) , no matter the outcome I should replace this anyway. Unless I have a way to lock the diff I will get a propshaft and hope this was my problem. It makes sense that it is the prop when I take my foot off the gas it would bind, but under acceleration it is under tension, I just can't get it to make any noise when I try to wiggle it. Hopefully the prop has absorbed the damage instead of the tranny!
The transfer box seems solid, no play, when I had both props off yesterday.

It could put a lot of pressure on the bearing in the front nose cone on the transfer box if your prop is a bit too long. OK, it might turn, but how worn or rough has it got? The fact that centre difflock will no longer engage is perhaps also a symptom of something being amiss in the front bit of the transfer box. Fortunately it is possible to change the bearing on the front output shaft with the transfer box still in the car. Once this is out you can also see the toothed slider that locks the output shaft to the diff body, so you can see if it moves freely and it's still got all its teeth! One of the Buster's Guides shows him replacing the front bearing.

Brown,

The only reason I cant lock the diff is that there is no lever/switch to do so! I only have the gear lever and the hi-lo lever. I tried the high low side to side but I don't think this is correct, unless it is broken or not engaging (I am just learning on this R380) . I think this is the locking mechanism in the photo below, can someone confirm this?

I checked both the front and rear output shafts and bearings on the transfer case and there is no play

So some easy web searching says yes, now I need to figure out why my hi-lo lever won't move side to side to engage it
the shaft thats connected to the lever in pic seizes in the ali housing on lhs of lever housing some lube and working should free it occasionally i have to remove the housing and strip it apart to free it

James, thanks for the info. When I put a wrench on the diff lock nut in the photo and try to wind it clockwise (which I think should engage the diff) it springs back as it something is pushing it back. Never locks into place. I guess if the lever housing is seized in the unlock position this would be pulling it back. I will try to get it loosened up with lube and if not strip it down.

Cheers and have a good holidays!

Tim

if you have a spanner on the nut facing forwards towards chassis is diff lock towards g/box is out ,it will be difficult if linkage is still connected, you test to se if in or out by jacking 1 front wheel up, g/box in neutral,if it turns it isnt in lock if it wont it is ,though it will move a little because of play in drive train, shaft goes right through housing its were it goes through the ali end cap were it seizes usually

OK then, maybe the bearings are alright. Just a bit concerned in case they were taking a lot of pressure due to the long propshaft. Yes, the mechanism on top of the gearbox that the transfer box/difflock lever goers into can get very stiff. Mine was extremely hard to move, but it was just a matter of rust and congealed grease because it doesn't get much lube in the normal course of events.
