Quick question,

can i just remove the trailing arms one at a time and replace the bushes without needing to jack the landy up?

I have a 2" lift so getting under is easy enough, even for a fat knacker like me,but will the axles stay in place ok with one arm and the a frame while i do the replacement, it wont be moved obviously and common sense tells me it should be ok but just wanted the opinions or experiences of you chaps.

Should be OK, mine came off easily one at a time .. ;)

Ta chaps, as i said just wanted to hear that others had done it this way, I had awful images of the rear axle slipping out of line and the chassis falling down etc etc etc

Heh, just don't let anyone drive it with one off .. ;)

Haha if your the same as me, then if it moved, it's not going to go far:D

off to do the job now, i have new bushes and a selection of new bolts and bits and pieces, shame its p1ssing down.

i will report back later on any success or more likely why i couldnt finish the job and what extra bits i now need.

The rest will hold it together, you may need to notch the brackets on the axle slightly to allow the extra angle, I had to do it with mine, I just got a grinder in there and ground a half moon shape out of the top edge of the mount, this gave it room to move with the extra angle

all done :)

nearside was a doddle once i had decided to stop p1ssing about trying to undo bolts that had more corrosion and crap on them than is natural in any circumstances, had to nip back to the bolt suppliers as like a donkey i had bought the wrong size for the trailing arm to axle bush but once i was back with new bolts and nuts I set about it with the grinder and soon enough the arm was off.

fitted new bushes front and rear of the arm and stuck it back on, all in all i would say about 40 minutes for that one.

the otherside was a bit more involved, again cut old bolts off, but the arrm was under a lot of tension in compression, so once i tw@tted the arm out with a BFH the rear axle moved forward about 30mm:eek: now i had chocked the wheels but they still moved so i stuck the landy in neutral with handbrake off and tried to lever the rear wheel back against the rocksliders whilst wedging all and sundry in there to hold it, still wasnt enough. Next attempt was to get the hi-lift out and try and use it like a giant G-clamp between axle and rear bumper (HD) this would have worked if the landy was up in the air but on the ground i couldnt get the room to pump the handle, so after a good swear and kicking session I pottered off to the local petrol station, on foot i might add, and purchased one of those wagon ratchet straps. I have wanted one for a while just didnt have the excuse to buy one, hooked one end on the bottom shock mount and the other over the rear bumper again and started to ratchet it tight. It seemed to compress the spring more than move the axle but whatever it did, with the aid of a trolley jack under the arm it lined up ok and i managed to get the bolt through, tightened it all up and she is done.

Many of the bangs and rattles have gone and more to the point, the disco no longer dives to the inside every time i change gear under load, so rears done just the fronts next, but im waiting until i can get into a friends garage to do those as the 2 post lift and 30 tonne press he has makes life a lot easier all round when doing the fronts ;)

great fun arn't they. just poly bushing mine. done the rear already, had to burn and cut the old rubber bushes out of the trailing arm to axle end. glad you got it sorted out matey, have fun with the front lol
