Traded a Mercedes G Wagen for a Discovery 3 TD5 7 seats

Hi, I am new to the forum, and new to Land Rover. Although loved and admired Defenders for long, a well as used one for a while.

Had a Land Cruiser 1985, a Suzuli vitara 1980, and a G 1994 for about 10 years. The only one that I kept for long. And reluctantly sold due to need of more doors and more seats.

My nickname comes form this background. As you can imagine.

Now with a td5, I have learnt , among other things, that engines can be reprogrammed and intercoolers improved to get more power, ..

I cannot sleep with this in mind...

Hope to learn with your experience to get the best of this car, and eventually love it as much o even more than the 4x4s I had before.

its not a discovery 3 td5, maybe disco2, if its a td5 have a look at www.dynachip.co.uk he did my td5 and loads of others on here and only costs £225 and he will travel to your location included in the price

Do apologize. Disco II Series. Wrong key!

G went very well, and had not corrossion problems in my case, other than partially rusted clips that support the "water channel" on the roof and changed after 10 years. As well as one corner at the back of the body, from below. Only could be seen from underdeath.

It is true that I do live in Barcelona, and therefore weather is somewhat friendly. Certainly not Notthingham or not even London, where I was living for a while.

is the disco left hand drive?

Yes, LHD. Just a month in my hands. But with 130,000 kms on it. Last 20,000 not taken care in an official Land Rover site by its second owner who simply "maintained the engine and the tyres", but did not invest on it. I am the third owner.

If it is of interest to anyone several things appear to have appeared during the last 10,000 miles approx that I will have to sort out:

Works very well, but needs driver door and one passenger door lock mechanism to be fixed. I will not open 2 of the doors with the remote control key. Only with the key in...But they will close. Maybe some sort of coil, or little piece has broken...

When driving, I can feel through the steering wheel some sort of "noise" that tells me that I am changing direction. I comes from the front axis. Everything behaves well in terms of roadholding... but I do not like it!!. It is the first time I "hear-fell" this in a car. It might as well be from the super supple power steering, but I do not think so. It feels like something conected to de steering wheel and the rods. Is it normal in Discos??

And at the back one of the seats of the 3rd row will not open once fixed propperly on the floor (it should allow back of the seat moving upright with no additional effort). Need to further investigate how it works. Have not managed to solve such trivial thing in 40 minutes. Again, would look like any little piece may be broken o not moving properly.

Oh, yes, I forgot, need to change the pneumatic rear-axis baloon-chamber-cylinder whatever it si called. Since it appears to leak, and every now and then, the back of the car will go down from one side or both. With no apparent logic on which side or when it will "fall on its knees". When driving it is always ok. And the system moves the back up and down fine. This is the easy bit to be solved...

I it wasn´t for these fixes that do not project a reliability expectation, and for the quality of plastics, the ergonomics of the car and the lack of pockets to keep the dozens of things that you must carry on a 4x4 o even only a family car, I do not miss at all my old G wagen.

Friends who have or konw people who have Discos have told me they are reliable if well maintained. I will do my part...

Would have preferred a Defender, but it is not a car to satisfy daily usage needs and motorway use with kids, and would have liked a classic Range Rover, but it has not enough seats for my needs. Thus, here I am with a Discovery ES, with a flavour of each of those.

I am looking forward to solving these issues, first (as soon as I find the answer or get someone to do it) , and will move into getting the intercooler and the ECU reprogrammed to reach some 180 HP, in order to confirm it has been a wise decission (I have already found someone near Barcelona who is a specialist in Land Rover Engines to do it)
