tracking/wheel alignment

Hi All,

I was wondering how often you guys go for tracking. Having a td4 for two years now and having been there for about 4-5 times seems to be a bit to much to me. I just drive on road usually and if not then slow. I know that pothole Britain and driving through Belgium might not help for that but had lots of 'normal' road cars and that happened not hat often in 20years or so and thought the Hippo would be bit more robust. Is there anything like tracking rods which might need to be changed or similar? I asked LR a bit back and they said it would look ok. Could there be anything else I'd need to check? I could find anything here related to that.

So do I.....Im thinking of buying a track ace....I belive you have one Hippo?.....are they any good?

I got charged 96 quids for front and back toe adjustments.....I could have bought a track ace for that

I had mine 4 wheel laser aligned after having the lift kit fitted as the cancer and stuff was out. Cost me £70+vat. The machine it was done on cost 10's of thousands of £££.

I'll probably have it done every 2-3 years.

Or if I have any suspension work done.

Yep. I have a trackace. It only works on 2 wheels. With parallel lines you can use it to set-up the rears too so they're the correct angle apart as well as parallel to the Freelander. Easier when doing the fronts if the rears are ok. If it steers to one side after the trackace, alter both sides to compensate then check with trackace then test drive again. Parallel lines below. Worked ok for me.

Thanks think I might invest in one....one their site they say they are working on a rear alignment fitting too...

had it done twice in 6 years, once after doing wishbone ball joint and the other after 4 tyre change

Some years ago I asked and they said there was one in design but not on the market.

im taking my disco to ATS for this soon, first time having a 4x4 tracked obv they know what they are doing (allegedly) but any words of wisdom?

It took four of them to make a right royal #### up of the tracking on my disco after I'd done the tre's.
I did it as per the instructions in HBOL when I got back home and it was fine.
I personally, wouldn't touch ATS with a long stick.

I went to ats asked if they adjusted the camber..they said sorry sir we dont do camber adjustments. ....I quickly left

Our council contract is with ATS. Useless is not the word, fookin useless is more like it.

Not done mine at all. It doesn't appear to need it at the moment. The steering wheel is straight, the car doesn't pull either way and doesn't wander around. If change steering components, I'll get it done after wards.

Most garages can only do the front wheels. They may call it "laser trac" or "4x4 laser trac" or something which makes you think they're setting up all 4 wheels, but most don't have the ability to check rear wheels as well. So my advice to anyone using a garage etc is to make sure they're able to do all 4 wheels if thats what you need.

I must do my tracking. This Fred has reminded me again that I haven't sorted it since I changed a tre good job I don't do many miles a week.
I have a set of gauges for doing the fronts at work. They are the old mirror and scope type.

sorry but tbh wouldn't waste my money how can that aligne properly, you need to clamp steering wheel,have car on 100% flat surface, weight load the car (ref-autodata), 4 lasers/guages round it & sitting on turnplates.if your tyres are wearing even(no feathering on either edge) your track is fine

i also went in ATs once for an mot, they proceeded to put it on a 2 wheel rolling road, i think the guy jumped out of his skin when i screamed abuse at him for about to rip my transmission apart

so after the brief time i spent there swore i would never go back

dakars done mine and found them very good, they sent it to a company over dartford way i think and they had a four wheel system designed specifically for 4x4 s

had it done when i had new tyres and suspension and been fine since

but i think like the other guys said, u would know when the alignments out when it starts pulling to one side, tyre wear on one side of the tread etc
