Hi All,
I would be grateful for some general advice/experiences of people who have towed heavy loads up to 3.3 ton with a Disc 2.5 diesel, over long distances of up to 1900 miles obviously with regular stops.

Is this type of car any good for this type of towing, what is the expected mpg, any faults expected that we can try to eliminate before leaving on our journey. Our trailer has a pin hitch rather the ball is there any preferences on this also? What speeds am i likely t get up to up long motorway hills will it go down to 25mph?

Is the manual box better than the auto box as i have heard conflicting stories? Any help advice would be appreciated as we are planning a trip and want to try to find a good car that can cope that does reasonable mpg, has good parts availability and good reliability for such a long journey. Thanks Fatboy

A landrover will do that, it will tow all day, every day BUT it will need to be in tip-top condition or you will suffer.

Have you got towing experience?

Of course speed will drop on a climb, speed is rarely the thing to worry about when towing, apart from too much of it :)

MPG will suffer of course, i would guess low to mid 20's

it'll be fine.Couldnt think of a better car to tow with.tow hitch matters little.Same for the gear box, what do you prefer?

Not towed that weight but towed large swift twin axel caravan. I find it's so much easier with an auto box towing than with a manual, others may differ but then life would be boring if all the same.As said previous they will tow all day no hassel on a long journey, do include some rest bits. gives the oil a chance to cool especially if in hilly aeras
