Towbars

Hi all,

I want to fit a towbar to my freelander se (which has reversing sensors).
Do i need a detatchable one or will a fixed one be ok?

Can anyone recommend a bargain place to get one?

I went for a detachable from ebay cos I don't like the look of towbars anyway.
Some have said that the fixed ones are no problem with parking sensors. There is a chance this may vary between different vehicles sensor sensitivity or towbar.

I had a fixed TB fitted, no problems.

Got a swan neck on ours with a great big clamp for the bulldog stabiliser - no problems with the sensors.

got mine off ebay, £75 delivered, with single electrics kit, took about hour and a half to fit in the dark on the drive.

I have a HSE with parking sensors. I have a fixed bar. I bought a Dixon Bate one from ebay brand new with plug in single electrics for £100. Apparently Dixon Bate make the genuine Land Rover part which just happens to look identical to their own, suprise suprise. You will need a relay for the plug in electrics. I bought a cheap one on recomendation of somebody on the forum but ended up swapping it for the genuine hella as the cheapie flashed too fast and the dash indicator lit trailer or no trailer!
Bought a genuine landrover kit for the secondary socket (again from ebay for £20). It took me the best part of a day to get the loom in and finish off. It was a bit more complicated than the standard split charge relay but works spot on.

Was this a genuine LR one?

I'm selling mine, complete fittings and electrics, keys, trying to get a going rate

it was a "tow trust" bar, with "tow equipe" electrics.

going rate seems to be about £75 for a genuine LR but used tow bar on ebay.

just went for the non-genuine LR one as my firm (at the time) offered to pay for it, but they asked for new rather than used, as it would have a warranty period, and they could claim the VAT back as it came from a supplier rather than an individual.

For info, I sold on my genuine LR detachable, plug in electrics and flasher relay for £100.

I was thinking more around the ton twenty (inc delivery), it's a mint tow bar, with little usage.

That would work out the same after p+p. Although for ebay it might be best to wait till early spring time when people are more likely to be getting prepared for towing.

Going getting one tomorrow from local place that sell on ebay, but just wondered how hard it is to connect up the wiring with the universal single kit ? do you get detailed instructions cos the lekky gremlins can be bad enough without cuttin and joinin looms etc

can you not just scotch lock it or splice and solder into the origional wireing?

probably can tbh but read the add on ebay and it said 7core so just wondered where they all go and how hard it is.. well find out soon enough anyway just hope the instructions are good

I would check RAVE, cause your car is the right age to have the towbar leccy socket already fitted and it should be just a matter of getting the right wires in the right holes. It's probably hidden behind one of the rear boot trim panels, e.g. the access point to the rear light fitting.

ok thanks, just grabbin Rave now and will check tomorrow for anything hidden in boot area.

If yours is detachable it's worth every penny of your price. The detachable LR bar is excellent.

Well ended up getting a ebay bargain.. complete LR towbar with the proper loom wiring for 45 quid plus post so well chuffed just need to go read which relay is needed.

Looking to fit towbar to 2006 Freelander 1. All towbar instructions say remove bolts from the fitted towing eye, but don't remove the eye? If I take the bolts out, what holds the eye in place? I can't get under to have a look because I live in Scotland and it is ****ing down as usual. SORTED.
