I need to get towbar fitted but not too sure at £350 quid!! How difficult is it because the kit from tow equippe is only about £100 odd quid??

Is it DIY-able?

I bought the tow equipe one from ebay.

it truly is dog easy, did mine in about an hour, it's only 6 bolts, no drilling or nuffink, all the threaded holes are already there, there's even a push out grommet to pass the wiring through the body. if you buy the right wiring kit, it will have a plug to connect to the vehicle wiring, if not, easily splices into the loom behind the drivers side boot panel using your chosen method of connection (solder, splice or crimp)

sadly you is in scotland, or I'd offer to come and help you.

I bought one second hand from the local 4x4 specialist breaker (In Scotland too!). Including the wiring and plug. Still had the Land Rover labels attached. £40 + VAT and half an hour to fit - simple job and cheaper than £350!!!!!!!!!!

Had a look this evening behind panel in the boot theres aplug there and it looks as if its bolted to the bodywork I take it that means its also earthed think i'll have a go fitting it myself . .If i need any advice I know where t come , Thanks Guys

has anyone fitted the 12S socket themselves? i can get the 12S socket and power relay from halfords for less than £30. im used to doing army landrover electrics, i just dont want to blow anything up on my freelander.

cheers, mick.

Sounds a fairly straightforward task then - I don't suppose anyone has any pictures of the underneath of theirs or their installation?? Want to see these fitting points that have been mentioned but my Freelander is in for service.

when you have the towbar and you look under the freelander, there is only one place it can go, and the fixing points coincide exactly with the holes in the tow bar. have faith.

two one each side. find the rear lashing eye. for one of the fixings, you remove the bolt and the eye, put the tow bar on, then put the eye back using the same bolt. there is another bolt right by it. Once you have found these two, there are another two on the opposite side in the same place.

finally, two bolts up into the bolt floor.

Optimus - if buying a used bar from eBay, will any Freelander 1 bar fit mine or do i need to look for an '03 onwards bar?? Wasn't sure if anything changed underneath in '03.

Also from a fitting point of view does it make any difference whether the bar is a 'flange' type or 'swan neck' do they still bolt straight on?

Cheers

Si

I think they were all the same, although the bumpers and lights changed, I don't think there were any structural changes to the body etc.

the one I ordered from Tow Equipe was listed as 97 onwards

Hi again guys , took the plunge and bought a towbar for my freelander 03, do I have to take the lash down eye off altogether or just take the three inside bolts out ,thanks in advance

depends on which one you have, the LR instructions show discarding the bolts and towing eye, but the one I had, I just put the towing eye back on as well, using the new bolts that came with the kit.
