Towbar electrics and the MOT

This is exactly my point. I have 2 connectors that do the same thing. What does it matter if one doesn't work cos I still have a back-up one? How can they fail my landy if the other socket works but they are unable to test it due to THEIR lack of equipment?

You'll have to wait and see if they actually implement the legislation, for a start. Anyone have a link to some kind of official site, for more (definite) info on it?

Same questions really, why do you have this fitted and does your car have 24V electrics?

Both are 12v. One is a 101 and the other is a Disco. One is, and one will be wired up and fitted with appropriate gear to tow the military sankey trailer, hence the NATO 12 pin plug.

They're only going to test the electrical output as part of the new thing.

What's so bad about that? Nothing worse than seeing a fooking caravan swap lanes or brake with no lights cause the driver didn't wire them up correctly, it does make sense to test them as part of an MOT.

With Landy's and other utility vehicles there are going to be variations like Ratty's scenario, but for the majority it'll be a step forward.

what would be more sensible is an mot for caravans/trailers. PITA I admit but the build quality on some is awful and then a complete lack of maintenance leaves em dodgy at best. I think its more likely there would be a fault on the towed item than through the socket... I dunno if theres even any regulation saying that the wiring must be done in a particular way

I think an MOT for trailers would be a good idea aswell, seen to many trailers loose wheels (particualy boat trailers) due to siezed wheel bearings, brakes not working or locked on.

As for tow bar wiring there is a standard wiring diagram don't know if it's law that it has to be followed though? but it probably will be when this test comes in, the other thing that will be checked that a lot don't have is the visual/audible trailer indicator warning.
