Towball weight restrictions

Im about to upgrade my caravan

for a bigger one and this got me thinking about towballs.

I know that towballs have their own weight restrictions, many being 100kg but does this limit refer to the towball itself, the bolts that attach it to the car, or in the case of my adjustable towball does it relate to the whole adjustable assembly? I guess things are only as strong as their weakest point?

Your toy bar only adjusts the towing height for a "level train"
The weight of the coupling should not vary much between your old caravan and your new one.
If you have to push the hitch down ...........WRONG
If you have to get help to lift the hitch on ...then need to raise the tow ball............WRONG
If you can lift the hitch onto the ball with one hand............OK
If you carry a set of bathroom scales in your Aygo just for connecting you 30 foot "sunrider" ......welcome to the caravan club

Should have about 200lbs of tongue/coupler weight about what a person can lift and will load the 110 just right, To much weight and it acts like a lever and will lift up the front end and effect your steering. If the trailer sways as you go down the road then the trailer is to heavy in the back, proper loading of a trailer is important

The recommended nose weight for any trailer is between 50 & 60 lbs.

Any more is placing undue stresses on the trailer coupling.

This is not to be confused with the train weight, which is the total load that you are pulling.

My point is that whilst an actual towball may have a restriction of say 100kg, it means nothing if the bracket and bolts it attaches to are of a poor gade.

Anyone know what the defender towball limit is?

If there is towball weight restriction of 100kg it refers to the maximum downward pressure on the ball itself.

Naturally, if the mountings are fecked, it'll fall off irrespective!!

On a Fender, it is still the recommended 50-60 lbs noseweight of the trailer!

But I'd want to reconcider that especially if you have a lift kit

and or donot have HD springs

Thanks everyone. Been considering a towball mounted bike rack that also allows you to tow at the same time. Ive got to check the noseweight of the new caravan along with the weight of my bikes.
