Hi folks,,just wondering if there is anyway,,of replacing the existing towbar with something that will take a nato hitch ,,,that will also move the plate forward and up past the rear bumper to give more height,,i have a sankey trailer i use for work,,which fitted ok to the disco before as it was raised ,,though some one had redrilled the plate to mount the nato hitch as the hole spacings were different. I guess basically anyone fitted a nato hitch to a disco 2 lol

Hi I've been running a Disco 2 with a NATO hitch for about 8 years. The Disco had a standard LR tow bar attached when I bought it but I found a genuine LR North American spec 2" receiver hitch for sale on EBay and grabbed it. A quick visit to a metal bashing shop and hey presto an over-engineered 2" receiver bracket that I can bolt a NATO hitch to.

I had an original Disco bumper and standard air suspension when I had the bracket made which lifted the mounting point for the hitch, out past and just about to, the top level of the bumper. Everything worked fine with many happy adventures pulling my Sankey-based trailer. A trip to Morocco told me that air suspension is great for pottering around Blighty or the US I guess but not much good for anything rough and stoney. I ended up on Aussie OME springs and shockers which lifted the back end a few inches.

I also trashed the original rear bumper on a rock step around the same time (maybe deliberately) so that gave me the opportunity to fit a steel rock bumper. This meant that the bumper didn't stick out from the rear as much and also was about an inch or so higher. Luckily my over-engineered bracket turned upside down with a couple of new holes drilled in it had the trailer hitched at the correct height again. A new hole drilled in the receiver hitch shaft for the retaining pin meant it didn't stick out past the new steel bumper.

Receiver hitches have the advantage that I can stick a WARN shackle fitting for towing, a ball and pin towing attachment but mainly it can be used for my yet to be procured 'Receiver hitch toilet seat' for use in the wild.
