Thought that might catch your eye!

OK I use a HTC TYTN II smartphone with integrated gps and TOMTOM sat nav. I am fitting a tracking device to locate stolen vehicles via sms which you simply put into mapping software, find your stolen car and get out the big bat right?

Well, when you put in a set of coords (like the techie speak?) that are not actually on a road TOMTOM has a heart attack and just points in the general direction of the lat and lon that you entered.

Not a lot of good with the amount of terrain out here between roads in Spain!

It might as well be pointing out to sea!

Apart from going to a PC and using Google earth is there any third party software I can use to add on to the phone or perhaps add onto the TOMTOM?

TIA

Can you get me some of what you're on?

Yep it's called hmmmmm....just got out of bed....whats that noise? Oh its the sea washing a against the beach.......oh what a lovely sun today as I watch it coming up over the mountain.

Ah well.... a nice cuppa and throw the scuba gear into the Disco and off we go...... right three hours later........I think I'll pop home and swap the scuba gear for some ski's and drive up the mountain and give the slopes a bash.

Right that's enough exercise today, a light lunch and a short siesta and on to the laptop and see what other gadgets/things I can fit on the Disco.

A quick look around the forums and then a walk down to the plaza and soak up a few beers and then go to bed ad infinitum!!

WHAT I AM ON IS CALLED EARLY RETIREMENT!!!!

You could try microsoft streets & trips and run pocket streets on the phone.

 sounds like he is suffering from nitrogen narcosis :D :D ya should wait a good while after a dive before you start any mountain climbin

 and i heard all these trackers and sofisticated gadgets are absolutley useless once the thief has parked the motor in a shipping container

Yes you are right if you dived beyond a certain depth you should watch your altitude....or should that be attitude?

And yes your also right that due to the 'faraday cage' effect trackers apparentley do not work.

Which is probably what the average profesional thief would do with a £100,000 Bentley ect but not a 200tdi Disco!

The system I am installing actually alerts you when the vehicle is moved from where you last parked it anyway.

Apart from trying to recover the cost of winch's and air lockers ect it's the amount of hours you put into a project which you cannot recoup from the insurance company in the event of a theft.

Now...lets see what other comment were made.....ah REDHAND thanks for the tip about microsoft maps I will look into that.

Robint....death wish no, along with the desire to enjoy life to the full I do not wish to sit on the nice safe sofa getting fat (well in my case fatter) watching coronation street......remember the 'one life live it' quote?

That's why I insured mine on an "agreed value" policy. Costs a bit more, but worth it I reckon.

Good point, but out here as I've mentioned earlier in a post elsewhere they do not like any changes to the vehicles, if you take a car into the ITV (MOT) to you and the towbar has been removed it is an automatic FAIL.

It seems the insurance companies/police use the ITV as gospel that the car is safe and roadworthy ect. Hence my need to have an engineers report to say I have changed the tyre size ect.

The moment you mention change the car from original spec they quote you a 'forget it' price hoping you will.

My insurance costs 360.00 euros per year full comp and includes recovery from off road breakdowns/accidents.

But an agreed value system out here really is only operated AFAIK by Direct line who wanted 1200.00 euros for the standard vehicle!

When in the UK I had an agreed value on an old car and it was good from a peace of mind view.
