Sorry if theres any bad speelin just got back from pub :D hahaha

there is an air idle valve that is supposed to regulate the idle mix for cold starts etc, it can become gummed up so needs removing and clean with electrical cleaning solvent, then test it on a battery, if it functions correctly, re-fit

had this on my wifes 1.8 when I changed the air filter, turned out there was an air hose at the back of the inlet manifold which had become dislodged. Massive amounts of air can then flow into the engine, which the ecu then increases the amount of fuel, so the revs rise, it then senses there is too much fuel and cuts the revs so there is now massive amounts of air again and so on.

good luck

As above really, probably the idle control valve, but also clean the breather pipes, throttle body, and idle air bypass pipe with brake cleaner. (Make sure it's all dry before you put it back and crank it though, brake cleaner is very flammable and your engine will run violently off it!)

The Z18XE, like any Vauxhall Eco(wreck)Tec commonly suffer from ICV malfunctions.
