About that |-----------| much

Seriously,

101.5Kw (136bhp) Power
315Nm (232lb.ft) Torque

In standard tune.

That's strange, in the book it states 125Kw but doesn't mention torque.Oh
well.

Doesn't it depend which vehicle it's in?

Quite possibly, those are the factory figures for a Discovery, but
it's quite possible its different in a Defender/Range rover, and could
also be different for different markets. The TD5 is quite tuneable,
and can produce wildy different figures depending on how it's set up.

Not that wildly different - the bore and stroke are fixed, tuning
can only mildly affect at what RPM things happen.

Oh, Really? So 67 Bhp from an early 2.5 and 145 Bhp from a tuned TD5
is something to do with the TD5 having twice the cubic capacity?

Better tell all those commercial engine companies that make engines
for trucks/buses etc etc that they can't, for example, get anything
from 180 BHp to 300Bhp from the same 9 litre engine.

I think you and Richard might have a different definition of the word
"tuning". To some people, "tuning" can mean whacking on a more beefy
turbo, changing the crank, flowing the head etc, while when I were a
lad it referred to fiddle-arsing around with mixtures. I wouldn't
refer to major engine changes as "tuning".

Also, you can increase BHP by moving peak torque up the engine rev
range, you don't get any more torque but it comes in at higher revs.

4-cylinder long stoke vs. 5-cylinder short(er) stroke - not the
same thing - you were comparing 2 5-cylinder engines of the same
bore and stroke.

Exactly - and it has to be the same basic engine or it's not
like-for-ike and cannot be tuing.

My point entrierly.

Alright then, go back to the 300Tdi which can produce 120bhp - and
that does have the same bore and stroke. It's still double what a 2.5
N/A can produce.

But it has direct injection, a turbo, the (then) lastest piston crown
design and an intercooler - that's not tuning, that's re-design -
effectively a new engine.
