Hi there i was wondering if anyone can help me with this problem.

I am about to top up the swivel pin housing with one shot grease, but the picture in my haynes manual is different to what i see under the landie.

I have a 2004 110 defender td5, i take it the photos in my manual may be from an earlier model defender.

Does anyone have a diagram or photos of the level/top up bolts i need to undo to apply said grease.

Many thanks

Colin

the earlier ones had a filler plug and a drain plug because they were filled with oil.but the newer ones (and my 1991 one is a "newer one") have only one filler plug as they should be filled with one shot grease.
you normally only have to top up the ones filled with oil and only then when there is a leak (which will be obvious on the bottom of the swivel)
what makes you think it needs topping up? unless your seal is shot and then you need a new seal.

To tell you the truth, i get a squeeking noise from down there when it is wet, the minute i even slightly turn the steering wheel it stops, but when i am driving in a straight line it will start again, but only when it is wet.

Looking down there it seems the right hand ball is a lot drier looking than the left and i was just trying to sort this squeeking noise out with a bit of guess work..

Hope you can help me in this...

What state is the swivel ball it's self in. Is it pitted/scratched as that can cause oil/grease to bypass it, but does sound strange for such a nee one to have gone. Does the noise occurs when moving or when turning the wheel?

the swivel ball looks fine, as i say the noise only occurs when moving, but only when its wet and it aint any of the belts cause if i turn the steering wheel while driving the noise stops. puzzling aint it..

with any kind of noise it's difficult to diagnose on a forum so you have to eliminate each moving part in turn.
first step would be to jack the front up and put it on axle stands,
chock the back wheels front and back and relaese the hand brake, main gearbox in neutral and transfer box in neutral, you should then be able to spin the wheels and listen out for any noises, then try steering left and right(you might need an assistant here) try all types of movements listening all the time.It wouldn't do any harm to put some oil (ep90) into the swivels if the level is lower than the plug.(it won't matter if you have grease in, they will mix)
If it's not the wheels or swivels, try the steering. If not that then you are looking at the prop shafts, trsansmision brake binding, anything that rotates needs checking. If all that fails do the same with the rear (noises have a habit of migrating) best of luck.
just to make it worse for you, whenever I have been off roading I get squeeks rattles, all kinds of noises and they usually disapear after a few days.
