topping up swivel pin housing

looked in the manual chaps and it points out two areas .Level plug,and filler plug but i can only see the one, a square-section head about half way down the radius at the front. I need to put some oil in as i think its a bit dry , its a k reg 110 ,its been leaking from the seals i did ask the mechanic at the garage and he said the design is a stupid idea beacuse it means stripping the hub and advised me to fill em up with grease, is this ok can you help please.

Aye it is ok tae use the one-shot grease. Make sure ye get it in the squeezy packet with the plastic tube as it's easier tae get it in. Ah'd drain the housing first.. the drain plug is below and just behind the bottom mount for the bottom swivels/ mud shield bracket. The filler plug is the one that ye think it is... square jobbie about half way up on the front. When ye come tae fill the swivel housin' with the one-shot, turn the wheel outwards as ye can get the tube right in that way.
If yer seals are leakin', then it might be an idea tae check the state of the swivel balls. If there is any pitting then the grease will end up bein' dragged out.. even if ye do change yer seals

Its not the hub that needs stripping to change the seal its the swivil housing..... means taking half the axle apart.

Common to drain and bung in a one-shot sachet of graphite grease, but that only lubes the CV joint in the drive shaft, it doesn't properly lube the swivil pins that the axle steers on, and it can still leak out the dodgy seal, it just does so more slowly!

Bottom one is lubed by the oil that sits in teh swivil, upper one splash lubed from the 'spray' from the shaft.

Use one shot and the lower will get a bit of lube, but the upper wont see much at all.

Idea that it is 'one-shot' is a bit misleading..... you need to keep giving it one shot at regular intervals to ensure that the CV stays coated, but the lube on the swivil pins will be minimal, which means that you WILL have to strip the assembly down and do the job properly at some point in the not too distant future!

There IS however a better bodge to swap replace the swivil seal WITHOUT stripping the axle, if you are dexterouse enough.... by cutting up a new swivil seal and fitting it in sections. The Swivil Seal Swizzle! Its good for a few extra miles, with EP90 in the joints and everything lubes as it should be.

But at some point you will have to bite the bullet and overhaul teh swivils. May be worth sorucing a second hand axle and overhauling it at your leaisure in anticipation, and doing an axle swap when the beam you have really needs it.
