my 53 plate td4 auto is being weird... I think

is this how it should be?

if when travelling at about 30-50mph, if i try to accelerate the revs go up but the speed does not go up as fast

If I were in a manual I would say that it feels like clutch slip but I have this auto at the moment

A little more information:..

If I am in traffic and going around 30mph it feels like it is in 3rd or fourth gear If is take of my foot from the accelerator it sort of coasts at around 1000rpm put my foot down and it goes to around 2500rpm and accelerates up then the gear changes and the revs drop.

There seems no direct link between the RPM and the MPH like I would expect to get in a manual

So is this how an auto box works with all it torque converters and such or is there a fault? ( I hope it is not a gear box fault as that would bankrupt me)

I am half looking at a MAF fault though I don’t know why other than it has done 42k

Any help

Ed

If I can I’ll try to video it so people can see what I mean

Mine is similar unless you press the throttle with some degree of action it will then change down
The slowing down mine does exactly
and also after so long on the brakes downhill it will drop a gear

Fitting a Roverron Maf kit made it better but it still takes some getting used to after 700 miles in a Focus manual during the week

CHECK YOUR OIL DJ . . .bout the time to change it , it will come out like crud ,new stuff is er nice cherry red,if yer wanna do it yerself its bin documentid in search, as fer the maf ,that would be a lack of power problem . . . .best oh luck earthling. . . .:)

that was going to be my next trick .. to change the oil.

I was at andrew pages today to get a new air filter (the old one was black with filth) and when I get it in stock i'll get some auto oil to and do it on thursday.

cheers

mine does the same, not to annoying, just thought it was the way it was (being new to automatics and turbo diesels). However, next service due soon, so I'll get the auto fluid changed then.

ok I have had a bit of a mad sesh this morning and changed the auto transmition fluid from a black gunk to a nice new red goo

at the same time change the engin oil and air filter

i was going to change the oil filter but the biggest socket i have is a 32mm and that looks like a 35mm (any clues?)

I noticed when pouring the old oil away that there was more than 5L so have had to buy another liter of oil (dam these big engines)

so lets see how that goes

I have also reconected the MAF sensor to see if I can tell a difference and i think the answer is yes

with is disconected it seemed that if i could keep it between 1500 and 2500 rpm then there was a load of torque and it changed gears at lower revs

now it is reconected it runs great from 2200rpm onwards but seems to fluctuated aroud all the gears

has anyone had any experiance of rover rons MAFAM p unit?

is it realy as good a fix as it says it is?

REET . . .YER BIN DOIN ALL THE CORRECT FINGS FURST [GOOD] THE BEST THING FOR A AUTO [JATCO BOX] IS TO CHANGE THE OIL BOUT THE 40K MILE MARK [oophs stuck in caps] so the maf is well documinted as going out of calibration or open circuit [that means its fooked] if out er calibration then symphons include lack of power and can be anywhere int rev range ,but most common at higher end 4x fixes 1= git er new un 2= buy a pierbough maf [cheaper but dunt calibrate the same so yer could still have problems] 3= git on rover rons web site have a good read or e mail im or phone for advice [reccomended] 4= if yer maf is really fooked [go to rover ron un fit a piebough maf un also a rons gismo ta recalibrate the pierbough maf ta talk proper to yer gaylander pooter] ron will give advice on this option. . . . .yer gaylander will drive like er bat outer hell after rons mod , nb lot of peeps pay er lot er money gettin gaylander flash chipped. . . .just my opinion, dunt get sucked in .. . . .go wiff ron :) :) :)
