....led on my back and peering into the engine bay absolutley cluless, can anyone advise me as to what the strange grinding/rubbing noise is when i put my left hand lock on in my 96 disco???

CV Joint or tyres rubbing on the radius arm.

to be honest i'm not realy that clued up:confused:, could you be a little more descriptive please.

i had a look underneath whilst somone turned the wheel, the tyres didn't appear to be catching, so maybe it could be the CV joint

If it's tyres there'll be a bright shiny patch on the radius arm where the tyre has rubbed.

If it's CV then you need to strip the hub down to get it out and replace it.

A worn CV joint makes more of a clicking or clacking metallic noise - you say yours is more of a rubbing noise. Would you describe it as a groaning noise?

If so it is the pas system groaning a bit. Check pas fluid level and front tyre pressures - set them at 31psi.
