to fix or not to fix?

Hi. I was just getting my old 1972 S3 ready for sale (sad I know but I need a horse puller....). All tarted up when pop the clutch went. Currently she's all original - would you guys recommend I fix before sale or not? It's a pricey fix if it's done properly and the crossmember aren't cut off and bolted back on and if you're going to do it properly you may as well replace all the seals etc at the same time. It's a pain because I've had her 15 years or so and this happens now! If I was a buyer I think I'd rather the price of the repair was knocked off the purchase price but maybe that's just me.......
 
Personally I would want it fixed so I could drive, check gearbox and know there aren't any other serious issues.
As a buyer, if it can't be driven then it's in project territory as far as I'm concerned.
 
Agreed, its not like a house where you can still live in it while you fix the roof. Its essentially being sold as a non-runner and that will drop the value a lot. I think a lot of buyers would be thinking, well the clutch may be gone but what if that's hiding a gearbox fault? Better to bid very low in case its a big bill. Shop around for the clutch change. Try a local mobile mechanic and take the floor out yourself to save time and money.
 
Don't forget the home mechnic optioon, that's what I did with my gearbox, I got it out and fixed it but no way was I going to be able to get it back in.
Did you talk about selling the Series within earshot? I think they are like dogs, they know....
 
if it isn't driveable you may end up selling at a discount to the already reduced value, a buyer would need to have it recovered to their address and would want to pay less for the vehicle to compensate.

most people want to turn up with the cash and drive away. so I would get the clutch done either by yourself or a garage.

Silly question time - but are you sure it's actually the clutch? (Or is this where I find out you're a time served LR technician, and I'm just being a dick!)
What happened - what bent 'pop'
What are the symptoms - is it dragging, or just not connected to the gearbox any more?
