Hi. I am yet a Freelander owner but I'm seriously thinking about it. Interested in a 2005 Freelander 1.8XEi. I haven't owned a 4x4 before so thought some of you might be a help. It will be used as a family car, going camping, carrying bikes etc, but not much hard stuff so do I need it? Have just skidded and written off my last car ( Megane ) and wondering if theses are safe beasts.
I have been put slightly off by a friend who said there were lots of problems in the pre 55 reg ones, especially with gearboxes. Can anyone comment on reliabily. I am getting the impression they cut out a lot from reading the forums.
Any genaral advise would be great if you can be bothered.
Thanks.

they do have reliability issues, go to which car, or what car and take a gander at there reviews, pretty damn reliable in my opinion(their reviews NOT freelanders!!)

if ur not doin any offroadin then i guess a gaylander would b great, but then so would a smart car!

get a defender mate, before u do somethin u regret

It isn't gearbox issues as such unless you are going for an automatic and are gonna tow with it. It is propshaft and the rear viscous coupling you need to watch out for.

Keep away from the 1.8 K series engine. They are plagued with head gasket issues.

If you MUST go for a freelander then the TD4 diesel is the one to go for.

My opinion is go for a Discovery or defender but thats just me. Do what you like it's your money.;)

Oh by the way. Welcome to the forum.:D

Hi and welcome, Ratty has it spot on. Steer well clear of the 1.8 petrols and buy a TD4. The petrol models had some serious reliabilty issues and depreciate badly. The Freelander has a car feel about it, if that is what you are used too. I suggest you get a test drive in one and a Disco too as this has a lot more space. Good luck.
