Tips on how to buy my first Landy

Hi all! Looking to buy Disco diesel manual in near future (aug '12). Looking for a cheap ish model (1-5k). Any tips on model, extras and common problems to look out for? Trusted dealer recommendation also welcome. Disco needs to take me to work and runs around Leeds daily and want to do some laneing in the beginning with pay and play once I learnt more!

Dont worry about the model too much the main problem will be rust, check the vehicle very thouroughgly they rust pretty much everywhere, boot floor, cills, front inner wings, rear cross member, and body mounts, also check the 4 wheel drive is working correctly in high and low ranges, if you can take someone with you that knows discos and what to look for or you could be buying a load of trouble, good luck!

Also check the servicing if it has been done well the engine and transmission will easily last over 200,000 mile.

Towards your top budget you should find a Jap re-import. Chassis tends to be in better condition than Discos that have spent their entire life in the uk. Condition is way more important than toys/age. Plenty about so take your time and look at plenty to give you an idea where & what to look out for.

I would check the chassis, get underneath it with a torch and screw driver/pry bar and have a good poke around, looking for rust, look for play in the track rods, bushes etc.

Check the state of the rear disks, they can seize so they will have rust/pitting on them if the pads are not coming in to contact

Check the doors all open, rear door not opening from the inside is now an Mot fail, this is quite a common fault

on the test drive, get it up to temp, make sure the heaters are blowing hot, test all the lights windows work

look out for leaks, sun roof etc and check the diff lock/high low range shifter is not seized

Wish I would have know all this when I bought mine!..been on a steep learning curve since!

Just be careful with jap re imports coz if its registered as a utilty vehicle and not an estate it wont be LEZ compliant if you want to go near the big smoke ok

Read lots of forum pieces and basically crapped myself at the idea of all the stuff what could go wrong (and does go wrong) with landys. But then I remember the times when I watched camel trophy and seen what they can do...
