CRO (the cave rescue organisation for the Three Peaks area of the Yorkshire
Dales) are selling one of their Land Rovers. See
http://www.dalesbridge.co.uk/cro/index.html for details. They plan to put it
on e-bay in a week,

Can any of you experienced in selling vehicles on e-bay give them some tips,
please - post them here and I'll pass them on.

I've sold lots on e-bay, but never a vehicle, and I get the feeling that
there's a bit more to it than meets the eye.

Thanks

Nick.

only accept bidders from the uk and bidders with more than say 5 feedbacks.
(no negatives).
that will stop most of the scammers.

set a realistic reserve price.
poss ask for paypal registered users only.
ask for a deposit within 24 hrs.
ask for balance in cash upon collection of vehicle.

check you vat situation? you may have to charge vat? make sure the buyer is aware if req.

Nick

The page looks pretty good, I'd suggest they transpose that page
straight onto eBay! As I'm sure you are aware, you can put HTML
code in your eBay description so it could, in effect, look identical
to the web page that already exists. General tips - lots of pictures,
and a decent description get the top price, both of which that
page seem to have already!

Matt.

Hi Nick, nice clean looking 110. Wish I could buy it myself, but one's
enough. Agree with previous post; the info you have on the dalesbridge
web-site is good; I think people like good photos and lots of detail. So
list all the extras they've spent money on and maintenance done (main dealer
service record?).

Tried cross-posting to uk.rec.caving? It doesn't get a lot of posts but I
think there are a lot of lurkers, some of whom are into land rovers...
Worth when you put the auction up posting the link to it on there and on
here (alt.fan.landrover).

Anyway, I hope they get a good price for it and have an easy sale.

Cheers,

M.

(PS, didn't know you were into L/Rs - the last time I saw you (if you are
the Nick Williams I think you are) you had an escort van... )

I'll pass that on.

u.r.c. seems to have been almost completely supplanted by ukcaving.com, and
it has been posted there, so I suspect that pretty well all the internet
savvy cavers will have seen it. Anyway, I reckon CRO will get a better price
if they sell it to a non-caver!

I am that Nick Williams. The Escort finally died after 296k miles, and now
I'm permanently installed in the Peak District and no longer doing 48k miles
a year at weekends, replacing it with a scruffy LR has worked out well.

Am I right in thinking you're one of the GSG's few Cardiff based members?

Nick.

A general point on posting links: keep is short, but don't assume that
people will want to click on the link to find out what's going on. And
remember that Usenet posts can linger for years in some archive or
another.

So, brief description, give the closing date of the auction, and
consider posting a report when the sale is made, as a follow-up.

I've sold a couple of vehicles on eBay (UK and Aus), the ending time of
the auction can be important - my own preference is a Sunday evening, with
a ten day duration to drum up trade.

Use the tiny.url website to make the eBay page useable without being
ten miles long.

Usenet ads on appropriate groups using the tiny.url gets a fair amount of
response. Dont limit yourself to English language groups as there are plenty
of people around the world with money to buy some strange things. I sold
a LR capstan winch to Brasil from Australia!! a bullbar to Germany and a
swag of stuff into the USA and Canada. An overseas buyer can add a
15% to 25% premium to your price.

Dont cross post as this sometimes gets some ****s spincters twitching. But
a flame war can also provide some excellent extra posting bandwidth as
others see why there are 50 posts on an "FA - Landrover" posting.

Provide a few links to international vehicle transport companies so that
buyers
can get quotes themslves - provide weights and dimensions as well.

Be honest - show the bad as well as the good.

Offer to deliver at a fair price subject to upfront payment.

Get a vehicle condition report done (AA/RAC) and offer a copy for five
quid - refundable to the buyer. For buyers who cant view the vehicle
easily it opens up a whole new market for you.

Don't accept Paypal - ever, never, dont even think about it. Tie a knot
in your undies so you dont forget!!

You are correct. Next time I'm in the Peak District maybe I'll drop by for
a caving / land rovering / cup of tea half hour.

All the best,

M.

Another thought, that would surely be an ideal vehicle for an LPG
conversion, with all that space a V8 and loads of life left in the rest of
the structure. Might be a thought worth mentioning in the description.

Cheers,

M

yep. agree with the timing of the auction end, is very important. sunday evening about 2230 hrs is perfect.

I advertised on the 4X4 site and was amazed at the number of obvious
scammers who replied wanting to buy.

Is this also a problem on Ebay and what do you do with them?

Derry

its a huge problem on ebay, esp with high value items.
most scammers have only just registered, so dont accept any bids from peeps with low feedback.
at the end of the day, use common sense. dont part with the car until the dosh is in your hands. never take cheques for more value than the cars selling price. ask for a 100 quid deposit after the auction ends. (within 24hrs). and the balance in cash upon collection.

I'm in Australia, and sold a landcruiser on Ebay to a bloke in Texas. That
sale eventually fell through, but within 5 minutes i had sold it again to a
bloke in California. so you are absolutely right, there are some people out
there willing to pay a ****load of money for something that they have never
seen. BTW, the landcruiser was a bit of a heap.

Sam.

My only problem with sales to the good ole USA is that 50% of the people,
no make that 95% dont understand that US dollars are not legal tender in
Australia. I've had everything from US personal cheques to US dollar
bank notes. Strangly no other country offers to pay me in Euros, Pounds,
Roubles or peanuts.

Same here too ..... but then I almost always have that problem when someone
uses the "tinyurl.com" or "makeashorterlink" doo-da rather than posting the
actual link itself.

Sorry, I tested that before posting but it's not working for me now. Need
to get the whole string into the goto window of the browser and now it's
just taking the section ending Z4, which doesn't work.

However, if you go to the Land Rover section of E-Bay and look under 110s
the vehicle is certainly there.

Perhaps someone who is more internet savvy will be along shortly and tell me
how to post this sort of link properly!

Cheers,

M.
