Timing chain

I was reading some of the posts abot the timing chain the other day.

My Series 3 is 40 years old, and I have no clue when (if?) it has been changed.

Should I consider getting it done anyway to be safe?

If it ain't rattling don't bother.

There is no rattling that I can hear, but it does produce white smoke when it's first started and when idling. This seems to clear once I get into higher revs.

I have had suggestions that it's either the timing or that the injectors need adjusting.

2 1/4 petrol + snapped timing chain = no damage to valves

2 1/4 Diesel + snapped timing chain = bent valves

IF you suspect it's worn then change it ...IF only for peace of mind ...and don't fit a split chain OR anything with a blue box
