Disco 4 (LR4) Timing belts and chains

Hi there

have a discovery 4 3.0 diesel HSE 2010 model

It was given to a local garage to get the belts changed by my brother whilst I was away.

got back yesterday to a message saying they have gone into liquidation

is there anyone local to Lancashire or not too far, who can finish the job. They’ve started job and opened up drivers side and injectors and everything out.

i have all the parts. Seals, water and oil pumps, chains and timing kits front and rear

just need price for labour and when it can be done.

Going down Tuesday to see the administrators with V5 to get car back and then arrange recovery

maybe one of the mechanics that worked there could do a homer for you and finish the job, after all they are out of a job!!

Tried to find out the mechanics but to no luck. That was my first thought too

Very few mechanics will pick up a job halfway through another mechanics work.

Yeah just realising that from all posts. I’ll find a local garage to put the one side back on with new chain and new belt. Then once on road take it to someone and get it all done properly

Just out of interest, why are you having the chains replaced? They're designed to last the life of the engine.

Plus 1 what’s been mentioned with regards to your ther mechanics not touching it

also mistified as already said with regards to the chains , indeed is normally the front timing belt and rear fuel pump belts that’s done

wonder if it’s worth posting on the D3/4 forum to see if someone can help

Quite common on the 2.7 and 3.0, the tensioners get weak and the chains wear, eventually they break.

inded as u say with regards to others not touching it

always reminds me when I was at work where someone had installed an entire heating system and then asked if I would commission and sign it off, would of course down right refuse and some really got the hump

never forget turning up to a customers house where the work sheet said “ boiler won’t fire “ , his wife answered the door nearly in tears , her husband had decided it was a good idea to mess around with the boiler , he had stripped it down and laid all the parts out on the worktop

I stood there in disbelief , I very polity told him that it’s an offence in what you’ve done and very sorry but won’t be touching it , but can give u a quote for a new boiler , plus controls have to be updated as it’s an old system , his wife hit the roof with him after I had given them a quote for 4k

he then decided to argue with me saying surely u can put it back together , I said nope as it’s a gas appliance and how to I know what you’ve done , left him to it and imagine after o left he really got it in the neck

May I ask out of curiosity are these the chains tensioners ur talking about plse , sitting at the back on the drivers and front passenger side plse , assume they just join the 2 x cams in each bank where the other cam wheel is turned by the belts , many thks

From my experience, the timing chains normally outlast the crankshaft.

Many a post about snapped 2.7 camchains, used to come up quite often on the disco 3 forum, and a few times on lz as well.
As soon as you see people asking for recon cyl heads you know it has most likely had camchain issues.

Nothing is for life. Engine dies out faster on most models than the chains and belts haha. Mine done 144k miles so well over due for change and all
Belts and pumps.

Got all original parts and original oil pump, Fomoco as FAI is of no use as leaks quick and oil pressure will not build up as quick as original Fomoco

Finally found a garage who will sort it. They’ve had a look and everything there, bolts etc so no issues.

Yeah exactly and didnt want same issue as a minor maintenance changing the belts and chain but if snaps and crank goes then car is just scrap

Thanks mate.

chains are over due as dealers state life until noise. But once noise is there sometimes too late.
Mines done 144k miles and needs doing with belts and water and oil pumps as the chains fail as their guides and tensioners give way after a bit
