Have you got the correct length timing belt?
Fitting the tensioner isn't a difficult job and the belt shouldn't be too tight.

It's common when the head has been off for peeps replace the tensioner and timing belt as well as the thermostat. When all the timing marks are perfectly aligned the belt slips on fairly easily. Do you have that cam locking tool? It does help.

You shouldn't refit an old belt. It's bad practice that has resulted in sudden failure some point later on.
