Time to buy paint , which finish?

my series 3 is now mechanically sound so its paint time
82 series 3 in marine blue , im going to very carefully roller it, Im purchasing paint from paints4trade which I have heard good things about , I assume its gloss i need rather than satin or matt as original good paint is quite reflective , I appreciate its my choice , however Im trying to restore it to its original glory

I think that if it were mine ID go for Matt as it tends to hide the imperfections from a roller better! Good luck !

if its any help I used a roller on mine, I used matte black from a company called aseop's paints they advertised it as military paint. it was very thick and dried quite fast and as a result It is a bit patchy in places. but when its covered in mud you cant see it, and its always covered in mud. I keep telling myself I will thin some down and re do it. for some reason there is always something more important to do in it though???

long story short, I think matte is more forgiving when using a roller and consider thinning it out

I went for satin with my s1. Painted by hand and happy with the finish.

Mine was satin when I bought it. Dirt did cling to it though. Went for glossy after refurbing it, much prefer it that way personally.

Think I will go for gloss , will update with photos when the weather holds out.

There's a good thread on this recently for applying by roller. Edging towards a re-paint myself. It's been marine blue an now Masai Red (previous owner). Thinking of going bronze green. I have period canvas tilt, give it a classic look. Problem is bloody wet weather so may stick with safari hard top.

my preference would be gloss but gloss is less forgiving of imperfections on the surface and poor technique, no offence intended by the poor technique remark you could be accomplished for all I know. I did a jag door once in gloss and it was so obvious, guess if you do the whole car that might be less of an issue.

One side painted , I couldn't be happier , only bit of advice I would give is don't use individual rollers for more than five minutes , because in certain places mine have left small particules where they have started to break down

I haven't done sill yet or under window because roller can't get in there , I think I will cut a roller down to 1/2 size

I think I will leave it up to a month to dry fully in current weather and then get light sandpaper and sand out the tiny annoying bits of foam the appeared in patches and re coat those parts

Has anyone had any experience of using material rollers? , although it does look pretty good the foam bits are really ruining it , I will have to to lightly sand it but dont want to use foam again if it will do the same , also do you think if I lightly sand it to get the bits out rather than re paint I can hand polish it back up ,

You could roller and then spend hours 400 - 800 - 1200 sanding it back, then G3 compound or you could just 400 the car and spray. I'm not so sure rolling is the fastest method, or for that matter the easiest for the same finish.

You can lightly sand if you've put enough paint down as for polishing some paints do some don't if you've used Hammerite it doesn't polish up well if two pack or acrylic then no problem! Ive not mentioned cellulose because the swines have now made it almost impossible to obtain

Saw a 70ft steel narrow boat painted using a material roller, An expensive one though. The finish was excellent couldn't tell it from a sprayed finish.
