Hey guys,
I bought my disco at the start of July (with an MOT so the dealer claimed), without an MOT. I took it to the local place I always go to for him to fail it for me.
When I was there he told my that he couldn't do the test because he couldn't find the chassis number, the plate in the bay is conspicuous by it's absence and there is no evidence of it on the chassis anywhere (we both had a good look whilst on the ramps). He eventually found the VIN no. in the service book, which he said he shouldn't but he trusted me that I hadn't nicked it.
When he failed it I took it back to the dealer for him to weld the thing back together (this is in another thread) but I was so eager to get it back, I completely forgot that the VIN plate was AWOL.
Anyway, I was looking for some rice in the cupboard last night when I found an envelope with DVLA stamped all over it-the wife said it arrived in the week and she put it up there because I had failed to tidy it away instantly (don't ask, I do and I get yelled at!).
The letter says (something like):
There is a problem with our records and we require the following information:
VIN/Chassis No._____________
This number must come from the body of the vehicle, not the V5C or Registration documents.
If you cannot find this, please call your local DVLA office.
etc, etc...
So of course, any self respecting, legimate owner would soil themselves thinking that their beloved wagon is a ringer. I was thinking through all the places I had looked, where I hadn't looked, where it might have been stamped. So I jacked it up, spent a bit of time rubbing off mud (and rust). Then I stood up depressed and ready to hand myself in at the nearest poilce station for Grand Theft Auto and I clocked the edge of a tiny plate, right underneath the black edge of the windscreen.
A little black plate with my VIN stamped...and it matches (thank the lord and all his little pixies!!)
The moral of my little story: Use the fooking SEARCH button!!!!!
And I did ring the MOTer up and give him a verbal head-butt for not knowing where the plates are, honestly!
