Well, it has come to that time where i am going through all the oils and filters.
done the pollen filters, old 1's came out in 2 pieces. also looks like the caps were changed not long ago as they still have the sealing foam on them :).
air filter is K&N so just cleaned and re-oiled.

just a few quick questions, prob easy for some of you, but as i'm new to this set up i thought i'd ask first.

1) fuel filter. in RAVE it say depressurization of the system. really ness? or can i just wrap a towel around the union and undo it gently?

2) when draining axles and re-filling, just straight forward empty and fill to hole level?

3) any advice on cleaning MAF? will brake and clutch cleaner do the job?

2001, 4.6

sorry if it is straight forward to some of you.

Dave

Just unscrew water drain on bottom of filter.
Axles drain when hot on level ground and fill until oil comes from filler plug.
Unless you are having problems don't touch MAF you may knacker it.

Thanks Wammers.

well it did actually stall on me today when turning left into a side road. RAVE said it might be the MAF that causes dropping of revs or stalling.

my fuel filter only has an inlet and outlet, no water drain.

Just undo carefully then it's not going to wash you down the road with the pressure. Bit naff if there is no water drain on bottom of filter. :D:D:D

Mine went through a phase of doing that, every time I slowed up for a junction or lights.

I went down the MAF route, cleaned it with carb cleaner (although it looked pretty clean when I took it out). Made no difference though!

Replaced the MAF and not had a problem since, even though I went with a cheerful cheapy off the bay (around £45 iirc). Was advised it wouldn't be as good as the lucas from my factors @ £135+vat (they would say that though wouldn't they!!) - I took the chance on the basis I could replace it a couple of times before paying for the lucas, but its still going strong a year later :D

Bloody idiot me why was i thinking diesel when it's a gas guzzler. Forget about water drain. Silly bugger i am. Condor moment. ;););):eek:

No No No... after late 99 models you will have the 4.6 Thor engine and Motronic engine Management. There is NO external fuel filter fitted. The fuel filter is part of the internal fuel pump, as is the pressure regulator. The in tank fuel pump is also different from a GEMS engine in that it is a one way system with no return. I changed my pump recently, and the filter on it is very large and unlikely to give problems unless masses of crud have been put in your tank. To check the performance of the pump there is a schrader valve (not easy to get at with the plenum in place but possible) to the rear of the injector rail. The pressure is greater than the Gemms system. 3.5 bar (50.75 lbf/in.2) as against the Gemms 2.4 to 2.6 bar (34-37 lb/in.2)

If you do clean the maf (as i do every few months) i'd suggest carb cleaner spray. I also tend to take out and clean the throttle stepper motor (mine's a GEMS though and for once easy to get to). Engine always seems to come up running and idling smoother, especially as I then reset ECU trims with my Hawkeye.

I too bought one off Flee-bay for my 2.5 DSE; it went back within week for refund. Eventually I sourced genuine replacement part from Paul at airmassmeters.com.

 On another note, I like to add my two penath:rolleyes:. I've always refer to these as Mass Airflow Sensors (MAS) but allot of people/mechanics refer as MAF or even both. I would of thought airflow was one word - which adds to my argument MAS, but airflow can be one word, two separate words or joined by hyphen (Air-flow). Just thought it strange.

Just shows why I don't win in pub quiz. Last quiz I got Q wrong - what does AWOL mean in British Army? I failed & lost

Just found this:-

If you are experiencing a repeated failure of your air flow meter this may be due to the fact that you have an aftermarket performance air filter that uses an oil based filter element. This in some cases will damage the mass airflow sensors on newer cars.

yeah, i was just putting that as an example of how people can and do get caught into buying cheap things.

Hi MATT! yes, sticking the original filter back in. bought it with the K&N already fitted.
