Tightening vacuum advance pipe

Hi all, I'm having trouble getting my SIII running nicely on acceleration and I've just noticed that the vacuum advance pipe from the carb to the distributor is only slotted on at the carb end, whereas all the other pipes are clamped on with those circular ratchet things that you tighten with a screwdriver (if anyone can tell me what they're actually called it would be useful).
Seems to me that if something needs a vacuum to operate then it best be airtight...

Anyway, just wondering if clamping the vacuum pipe on might help the running of the engine (on acceleration), and if so does anyone know where I could get my hands on some of the ratchet things i need.

hose clip .vacuum pipes dont need a clip, suck through manifld end to see if diaphragm still holds vacuum and moves plate in dizzy
 
Ok brilliant, I was kind of hoping that might be the cure for some of my problems but things are never that simple are they?
I'll definitely check out the diaphragm thing though when I get home.

They're a push fit 'cos the vacuum sucks them on. I've had a few perish and once they lose their stretch and get sloppy they tend to suck air in - you can usually hear it hissing. Might be worth replacing the pipe anyway.
 
Yeah I may as well because it looks like I need a whole new vac adv unit anyway. I'm assuming the diaphragm should be totally airtight, which I've now found out mine isn't. It still moves the mechanism but when I took it off and sucked on it there was definitely some air getting through.
I've found the right part at my local landy specialist but unfortunately it's £40 (it's a genuine part at least). There are others on the internet but it's impossible to tell if they're the right ones from the pictures.
Anyway, I hope it makes a difference...

That's a good idea actually. Having just looked at prices they're nowhere near as expensive as I would've thought. Cheers.

Having trouble starting my 1969 series2A. Noticed the hollow copper core leading from diaphragm to carburettor was not connected - would this be an issue?

Zero sound from starter. Last time it was started it seemed stressed and didn’t fire first time. Somethings there would be a humming noise not starting.

Replaced distribution head and rotator arm along with condenser.
Replaced ignition coil a few months ago. Lights on dash are on and battery reads 12.08 - also tried jumping it.

Any help would much appreciate.
