Have a listen to this...

it's driving me mad. Only just started, haven't done anything to the car lately.
No loss in power.
Does not start until engine is warm
Does not go away when clutch down
Does not go away when breaking
Breaking is fine
Get faster / slower as engine revs / idles.
Nothing seems loose.
Seems to be coming from Left side of engine.

Vac pump? Fuel pump? Something worse????

Have you slipped off the drive belt and run it to rule out alternator/power steering pump/ idler pulleys?

haven't, nothing looks or feels loose or wobbly, and its a a good loud noise, but i'd love it if it was a pulley. trouble is getting the car warm so ticking starts without belt on. we'll see.

Could well be the vacuum pump then. If you do decide to change it, don't buy a cheapo one unless you enjoy changing them. I changed mine a couple of years ago for a blue box one and after a year it hammered the rivets off the end plate and splattered oil everywhere.

Oo buggritt ...

Had the same thing last week, it's the injection pump being starved. When you start up there's fuel available and is fine but then it can't get enough
and starts the tickin. Check your fuel pump function and blow back down your fuel lines while you're at it.

Edit, unclip the air filter and wedge out of the way. You can loosen the fuel lines (pointing to the rear) and remove them. Put a finger over the spigot and use the priming lever on the bottom of the pump to make sure it's sucking properly. I think the lower one is "in" and the upper "return". Not too mucky.:D

Edit edit. Go to JGS if you need a new pump, they supply the new nuts and olives which you might not think of otherwise..

THANKS FOR THIS. Next time the baby settles down on a sunny (ish) afternoon I will get to it.

No worries. Is surprising what you pick up as you go along :)
Erm, how long do you have to wait for a sunny day in Oman?
Babys is more important anyway, enjoy.

A couple of times last autumn I had a fueling lssue.
No power, wouldn't rev. Leave it for ten minutes and it'd go again, for half a mile. Leave it for longer, it'd go further. Weird.
Fitted a new pump and blew back the lines. Fixed.
Until two weeks ago when I started to get the old symptoms again, then the ticking started. Reckon the strong fuel pump was doing just enough. Blew back the lines and hey presto.
Something in the tank occassionally clogging the filter?

Went for a drive today and the ticking was back. There is NO loss in power though so maybe it's no the fuel, could be the VAC pump??
