Got this annoying ticking which increases in noise & speed with revs. I do not believe it to be tappets. I ve given it a oil change along with all filters recently.

Using my cheapo version of a stephascope, first of all i thought it was fuel lift pump but then realising it was touching the injection pipes. put it against them and that was were seemed to be the source of the irritating ticking noise - tinny

no blowing ie head gasket

so have chucked in some injector cleaner just to see if it makes it slightly better it could be them. only done 2 miles since so have to see how that goes

hold each of the injector pipes in turn. Are any of the pipes pulsing in time with the knock? If so it would point at an injector fault.

It may also be worth checking the tappets are in adjustment and also the small c shaped spring clips while you are in there. I've had one break in the pst and give a ticking noise.

If it's more of a tick than a knock then I would suspect it's the vaccuum pump at fault.

If it's a loud clacking sound then number 4 piston is on it's way out.

Ok update,

Installed a new vacum pump last nite - guess what the noise is still there!

so confirmed not tappets, vacum pump

I hope its not what you said ratty - piston the sound is quite clacky.....

Ive had to people saying it sounds really low and one of them saying they reckon it's the early stages of the big end.

what next? Was going to maybe (dont shout at me) try some slick 50....heard this has solved the problem for long peiods of time on things like bottom ends......but not sure about mine as the noise is constant regardless to if it's cold or warm. if you drive down a hill take you foot of accelerater the noise dissapears being when there is no load but not at idle.....help

I know you said it was coming from the offside but this engine has a healthy appetite for exhaust manifold gaskets, usually accompanied by oil residue leaking down the engine block behind the turbo. As the gasket fails it leaks and as the piston fires it sounds like a ticking. i would check the bolts on this for tightness first as they may be loose - the inlet manifold shares the same gasket, they are about a fiver from Paddocks etc.

cheers

ok had a look last nite, checked bolts there were fine apart from the one that was missing  the one nearest the front of the engine along the bottom for the manifold.

i did not fire the lump to have another listen as it was ****ing down. but did not think it was from there.....would not think a missing bolt from manifold would make a knocking/clatery sound...

were do i get the manifold securing bolt & nut. can a buy just 1?

Hi James300tdi,

Be sure to let us all know what you discover this noise was from!

Someone like Ratty should run a book on these problems!

Piston slap **usually** comes on LIGHT loads, and you say you hear this one when pulling a bit.

So ... it is a mechanical ticking noise, or is it a spitting noise of a gas leak from the manifold gasket?
