Thule Roof Bars confusion

Having now upgraded to a Td5 2003 Discovery (Facelift) and also an upgraded family size, I have been thinking about adding extra load carrying for holidays etc.. I don't want a full traditional roof rack as it won't be used that often and can't face the thought of lifting it off and on as I'm only short.

I thought Thule bars (or similar) would be the best option but then got thoroughly confused at a local Halfords when I was told that I should go for the bars which clamp to my factory fitted rails. I will be after a longish roof box and can't believe that there will be enough support for a 5ft long box if relying on the distance from front to back of the roof bars. Halfords bloke suggested that the bars clamped to the gutter rail would be too high and wouldn't even suggest which ones would be suitable.

I am sure that there are many people out there who have fitted roof rails and would appreciate some advice.

Thanks

I've a set of pukka Thule bars that sit on gutter mounts for the disco, much prefer using them if a biggish load going on top, ideal for a 5' box, no problem at all when I've had four bikes up there.

Bought mine off the 'bay, sure they must be on the Thule web site though.

The only good thing to ever come out of Halfrauds was some colour matched paint, once. In my experience, they are pillocks. Their "professional", trained staff installed a newborn childs seat, without actually putting the seatbelt through it, thus it was just perched on the car seat. Tossers. I have seen three employees struggling to fit a set of roof bars at their store, so I don't rate their knowledge a great amount!

We have just upgraded from a 2002/52 TD5 (facelift) and had the Thule roof bars which were great. We have used a top box on them for holidays and carried ladders or floorboards on them for DIY. They will be for sale soon if you haven't already got some. Make me an offer!
