I have 97 300 tdi and while having a nose about underneath i noticed that at the top part of the sump towards the front of the car, near to the bottom pulley there is a hole which has a thread inside, Should there be a bolt or anything in this hole?

Any help gladly appreciated !

Cheers guy's....

no idea about the 300, but im sure as hell that there shouldnt be any hole in the sump!
check with a bit of stiff wire if it goes all the way thro into the sump. if so, i would find a suitable bolt. asap.

It's not actually on the sump but just in front of it, and in front of that is a wheel of one of the pulleys. I too was thinkin that if it has a thread then something must go in it! Think il take a walk down B&Q's and get a bolt to put in it just to be safe than sorry!

I think it's a breather for the timing case, i know the defenders had one. You see a piece of what looks like mesh in the hole if it is. The thread is for a wading plug.

there was no mesh in the hole, just a hole with a thread , so should i leave it open or put a bolt in as i just went out and bought one?

It may be, as said above, a breather. If you were going to do a lot of off roading its best to stick a bolt in to stop water ingress, otherwise leave it alone.

Oh, and never ever worry about a missing nut or bolt on a disco. There has been numerous recalls from LR to make sure that there was the correct amount missing on every model..........:)

it definately a breather. bung it up if youre wading deep otherwise no problem. if you bung it up remove it every so often to allow s**t it come out

if youre bunging up the timing breather then you might wanna do the clutch housing with one.

they are both the same size

Nice one guy's thanx for lettin me know what it is, I put a bolt in it but think i'l take it back out......

only put a sort pin in its for locking off your timeing when putting a new belt on im 99% sure of it
