As above…
Took mine off today - Jesus it was full of crud! Cleaned out as best as possible.
Got me thinking about just getting a EGR blanking kit - BUT, what is the general consensus on these?

Do you have to get the ECU updated, so it knows there is no EGR, or just unbolt the bejesus thing, put a blank in, and crack on?

On a Freelander 1, it's possible to remove the EGR without any real problems, just get a good kit.
However many people prefer to keep it, and just clean the manifold every 50k miles.
For reference, a good quality EGR blanking kit costs about the same as a shiny new pattern EGR valve. ;)

Could be the way to go then at a future date - I don’t have any reason to suspect the current parts, just like to make sure everything is ‘working’ as well as. Gave all the air box and pipes a good clean, but never got as far as the manifold - besides, I need to get new gaskets in readiness.

If your EGR was anything like this one below, then your manifold and the MAP sensor attached to it will also be gunked up.

The seals gaskets are reusables' wipe then clean with a rag,

you want the manifold cleaned out as below.

Scrap most of the gunk out then you can jet wash the manifold out clean.

When cleaning the manifold out the MAP sensor needs to be removed, and wiped clean, carb cleaner on a rag wil do the job, do not poke anything into the MAP sensor breathing hole.

I must change out at least 5 manifold and EGR plus clean MAP sensors at the meets we have each year, we have 6 meets per year, for the Rover 75 & a quite a few now own FL1 TD4 they have the same engine.

I fit either a cleaned out EGR or an original EGR gutted.

Your FL 1 TD4 will feel the difference one the above has been done.

Thanks Arctic - mine was nothing like those! Gunky for sure. Gave a good clean out but still not sure the valve could actually move.
I’ll have a go at the manifold in the next couple of weeks - unless you are in Kent and fancy another to do!!!

Still undecided what to do about the EGR (leave alone / replace / delete) Not heard of using a gutted one, but makes sense. I read somewhere that the blanks still need a hole to work.

delete it .. the motor .. and clutch .. will thank you .. plus you should notice a positive difference when driving it.
see post 819 here [page 41] :

```````
the intake mod. also helps [see link in my sig. ]
i.e. the faster the intake air gets moving over over the maf sensor .. the better the response from the go-pedal ..
.. it also helps to remove the foam surround from the air filter .. although .. if driving much off-road ..
maybe keep it fitted .. [ twigs 'n leaves .. etc ]
see post 15 here .. for egr delete vacuum hose info ..
[ to add .. 15th march ]
on thinking about it ..
if i were strictly only allowed one mod. to the engine .. [td4/m47]
it would be the 'egr delete'
.
