Disco 2 This is where the Oil Filter is?!

This is a little thing that I expect everyone to already be familiar with, but I'm still a Disco newbie...

While getting to water pump (turns out not water pump but Power Steering rot on shaft) I had to take off the turbo. Underneath the exhaust manifold I found the oil filter. I get that you could get to the Centrifugal filter without the Turbo off but the normal filter looks pretty difficult to get at.

Is this really the only way to get to the Oil Filter?! Do you really have to take off the turbo every time?

I'm getting a Service Pack from Bearmach a little later tonight but is there anything else I should get to work on while it's in bits?

No.. there is a oil filter spanner for the td5 filter check paddocks site for one.
 
When you put the new one on only do it up hand tight, and NEXT time you come to take it off, put a pair of rubber gloves on and loosen it when the engine is still COLD, then warm up the engine. The filter will come off with your hands in gloves. Put a small plastic bag like a dog pooh bag around the filter to catch as much spilled oil as poss. It ain't impossible, just takes a bit of practice!:):):)

A 'tard must of chosen the placement for the filter on the TD5.

Engineers don't ask mechanics!!!!
Have used all sorts in the past including a weird thing that attaches to a 1/2" breaker bar, prefer a strap wrench with a rubber type strap. but i only ever need one once as I do the job properly and can use rubber gloves from then on!
 
I remove the oil cartridge filter by hand, not exactly a cinch, but you can get your hand in there relatively easily from above (unless your hands are like monster mitts!) to remove it and also put the new one on - never use a spanner or strap and never had leaks at the filters. Takes less than 5 minutes to remove and replace, making sure seal isn't left behind and new seal is lubricated.
 
I use an oil spanner - it's simple, cheap and although it's a Britpart (DA1117), it does work and is still in one piece !

Also, go easy with the bolts for the centrifugal filter cover as they are know to strip the threads on the housing.

Noted! I have been really going to town with WD40 before touching anything recently.

Actually I've got a method for stuck stuff but i've never run it past anyone. Loads of oil about an hour before, if it doesn't come easy, paint stripper gun to warm everything up and then a big old breaker bar, used slowly.

I've found that massive overkill, used gently, breaks less bolts than using a small spanner with violence. Or am I just way off the mark?

I have this as well but never used as it fits only for one type of filter (maybe for genuine or Britpart?).
I use this type, works well for me.
